All professionals working around cranes must understand the potential dangers of these awesome machines and take great care to deliver a safe work environment for their colleagues and themselves.

They must also recognize the top hazards of crane operation, including:
• Cranes coming into contact with electrical lines
• Assembly and disassembly of cranes
• Overloading the crane’s capacity, which causes overturns and collapses
• Improper rigging
• People being struck by moving loads

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reported sobering statistics:
• More than 1 in 3 construction professionals has been exposed to hazardous noise
• 52% of construction workers who have been exposed to noise don’t wear hearing protection

The good news: Workers and their organizations can take steps to reduce noise levels and mitigate the risks.

October is National Protect Your Hearing Month, making now a great time for companies to redouble their efforts to protect their employees and safeguard their workplace.

Regularly take the following steps to help your employees:
• Determine on-site noise levels
• Tell employees when they are exposed to hazardous levels of noise
• Provide protective equipment, and mandate its use
• Maintain tools and machines, and replace faltering equipment
• Deliver safety trainings, including on how to protect hearing
• Move noisy equipment farther away from workers
• Establish quiet areas where workers can separate from the noise and recover
• Encourage workers to have their hearing tested

No matter the procedures and safeguards in place, accidents happen. In response, many companies turn to human and organizational performance (HOP), the discipline that helps them better understand how the work gets done and how to build in safety.

“Human and organizational performance helps organizations become resilient and adaptable and learn faster than their risks change,” writes Sahika Vatan. “Rather than waiting for incidents, they improve the systems employees work in.”

When a mistake happens, HOP shifts the focus from blame to understanding the conditions that led to the error and what businesses can learn from it. Adds Sahika, “That shift changes everything: how organizations investigate incidents, how leaders engage their teams, and how they design work. It also changes what counts as success, including stronger defenses and faster learning, not just fewer incidents.”

According to estimates from the National Safety Council, workplace injuries cost more than $181 billion in 2024 and resulted in more than 102 million lost days.

A strong safety program does more than respond after an incident. It helps organizations recognize hazards early, use injury reports and insurance claims to spot patterns, and take corrective action before similar incidents occur.

Here are 5 steps your company can take to prevent injuries.
1. Identify high-risk activities, and put safeguards in place.
2. Provide the right equipment, and keep it well-maintained.
3. Solicit employees’ ideas to enhance the work site’s safety.
4. Conduct and implement a job hazard analysis.
