We are excited to announce the SCCS-NY 2017 special event! Join us Thursday, October 12th for an evening panel discussion on challenges and solutions for the ocean.

Our oceans face more threats than ever from overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Yet a number of innovative solutions have been proposed in the last few years that can make a difference in how we think about protecting marine environments. SCCS-NY 2017 plenary speakers, Jeremy Jackson and Nai'a Lewis, and Merry Camhi, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Seascape, will explore how managing the oceans through innovative policies and conservation approaches can help sustain seascapes and species — including the billions of people who depend on the ocean for their livelihoods and well-being.

This free public event is organized as part of SCCS-NY 2017. To learn more about this year's conference and how to register to attend, please visit www.amnh.org/sccsny

Community volunteers throughout the Hudson Valley are getting out their rain gear and clipboards in anticipation of annual breeding migrations of salamanders and frogs.

In early spring, after the ground has started to thaw, species like spotted salamander and wood frog emerge from underground winter shelters in the forest and walk overland to breeding pools. In our region, this migration usually occurs on rainy nights in late March and early April, when the night air temperature is above 40 degrees. When these conditions align just so, there can be explosive (“big night”) migrations, with hundreds of amphibians on the move. With this week’s unseasonably warm temperatures and the rainy weekend forecast, the 2017 migration may start as early as this Saturday night.

Drivers are encouraged to proceed with caution or avoid travel on the first warm, rainy evenings of the season. Amphibians come out after nightfall and are slow moving; mortality can be high even on low-traffic roads

NASA Climate Change

“Climate change is the challenge of our generation, and NASA’s vital work on this important issue affects every person on Earth.”
—NASA Administrator Charles Bolden

Earth’s 2015 surface temperatures were the warmest since modern record keeping began in 1880, according to independent analyses by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Globally-averaged temperatures in 2015 shattered the previous mark set in 2014 by 0.23 degrees Fahrenheit (0.13 Celsius). Only once before, in 1998, has the new record been greater than the old record by this much.

This color-coded map displays a progression of changing global surface temperature anomalies from 1880 through 2015. Higher than normal temperatures are shown in red and lower than normal temperatures are shown in blue. The final frame represents the global temperatures 5-year averaged from 2011 through 2015. Scale in degree Celsius.
