As a learn by doing university, CPP students are encouraged to do research where the student can learn how to ask scientific questions and address them experimentally. To provide students with the opportunity to conduct research, faculty need funds to purchase supplies. Congratulations to professor Dr. Juanita Jellyman for receiving the Gail Jenkins Teaching and Mentoring Award. Dr. Jellyman was recognized by the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) for her use of engaging learning activities to help students truly understand and retain the more difficult Physiology concepts with kinesthetic and active learning strategies using inexpensive everyday props. The award also recognizes Dr Jellyman’s mentoring of other instructors to incorporate active learning to benefit more students.

New paper out from Dr. Erin Questad’s lab, led by former undergrad (and current UC Riverside PhD student) Glen Morrison. He studied fountain grass, an invasive species that promotes wildfire. Fountain grass is found in disturbed habitats thought to be high in soil phosphorous. Using the greenhouse experiment reported in this paper, Glen and Erin found that nitrogen, but not phosphorous, increased growth and reproduction of fountain grass.
