Jacqueline Ingenito and Matthew Retana partnered with E’Lisha V. Fogle-Enang, an assistant professor in The Collins College of Hospitality Management, on a project supported by the Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies’ Inaugural Co-Learning Pairs Mini Grant.

Their research explores how immigrants use digital spaces to share stories of mobility, resilience and community support. This spring, Jacqueline co-presented early findings at the 4th Annual Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies Research Symposium, while Matthew presented the work at the Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Conference.

They each received an Emerging Scholar Award and will participate in the 11th International Conference on Tourism and Leisure Studies this June.

Congratulations, Jacqueline and Matthew!

Inside one of the most innovative venues in the world, 48 Collins College students experienced hospitality at scale.

On Monday, May 4, students stepped into SoFi Stadium to learn directly from alumni and industry leaders shaping the future of hospitality. Located in Inglewood, the stadium has hosted global events like Super Bowl LVI and will take the world stage again for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Summer Olympic Games, offering a real-time case study in large-scale operations, guest experience and venue management.

These experiences are part of how Collins prepares students for the realities of the industry. By connecting classroom learning with direct access to professionals and complex operating environments, students build the confidence, perspective and practical skills employers are looking for.

We extend our thanks to Christy Castillo Butcher, member of the Dean’s Advisory Board, Alex Castellanos ('07), Eric Flores ('13), Stephanie Garcia ('16), Lisa Honda ('17), Rebecca Netzel ('23), Marissa Smeets ('18) and Annie Wu ('22) for investing in our students and sharing your expertise.

This year, Collins College students embraced Cal Poly Pomona’s Common Read “I Never Thought of It That Way,” by Mónica Guzmán, using its lessons to strengthen how they communicate, listen and connect with others.

The program encourages the CPP community to explore the same book and converse about it. Our students took these ideas to heart and wrote thoughtful essays about open-minded conversations and even applied them to the real world.

Students Celeste A. Chavez, L Lopez and Tomoe Neo were among the essay contest winners.

As a first-year student Chavez reflected, “How can I express my opinions while still respecting what other people think?” This mindset is exactly what helps our students grow into strong leader in the hospitality industry. Read more: https://bit.ly/4eHMHkM

What does it look like to learn hospitality at the highest level?

Students stepped inside the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles — a private, invitation-only social club where industry leaders and executives connect — for a behind-the-scenes experience few have access to.

Over lunch, they sat down with alumni and the club’s membership team, including Victoria and Casandra, for meaningful conversations about career preparation, industry expectations and how to stand out in a competitive field.

Thank you to CEO Matthew Allnatt, Daphne Brogdon, Alex Chan ('17), Nadine Liauw ('09) and Ivee Wilson ('08) for investing your time and insight in the next generation of hospitality leaders.

Experiences like this build confidence, connections and a clearer path forward — supported every step of the way.
