In bringing two styles of education—traditional liberal arts and sciences programs and conservatory-based arts programs—into close contact on one campus, the founders of Purchase College hoped to inspire an appreciation for both intellectual and artistic talents in all students. Founded by Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1967 as the cultural gem of the State University of New York system, Purchase

College today enjoys a world-class reputation for its arts programs and high rankings for its liberal arts and sciences programs. The College attracts students and faculty from around the world to its 550 acre suburban campus located just 35 miles north of New York City. We bring together students seeking a place where they can develop their talents, expand their minds, and prepare for a life of intellectual and creative independence. The approximately 4,000 students and 300 faculty members here are not passive culture appreciators, they are active culture generators. By choosing to come here, individuals make a conscious decision to pursue their studies and their careers in a more intense environment. FAST FACTS:

Meet Dexter Pretnar, ( Dexter P ) a Jazz Studies major in the Conservatory of Music.

For as long as he can remember, Dexter had balanced two passions: music and tennis. While many students feel pressured to choose just one path, Purchase gave him the opportunity to keep growing as both an athlete and a musician.

At Purchase, your passions don’t have to compete. They can thrive together.

A student had an idea. A class made it happen. Only at Purchase.

When Studio Composition major, Abel Garcia, wanted to create a music video for his first single, he connected with Music Video Production professor, Alan McIntyre, and turned the project into a campus-wide collaboration featuring student filmmakers and dance majors.

Be sure to check out the music video on Youtube, out now!

Meet Kristinne, a former YPIE student and recent Purchase graduate, who shares how visiting campus helped her picture herself here and ultimately led her to choose Purchase to pursue her Bachelor’s in Communications.

Through our partnership with Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE), eligible YPIE students can benefit from direct admissions to Purchase, expanded financial support, and a housing scholarship will be awarded to one student from each Yonkers public high school, making a Purchase education even more accessible.

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating two members of the Purchase community whose work continues to make an impact through art, storytelling, and representation.

Kyle Abraham ‘00, founder of A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, has spend nearly two decades pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance through work that explores love, identity, community, and self-discovery.

Megan Rossman, Associate Professor of Communications, has brought important LGBTQ+ stories to audiences around the world through documentaries including The Archievettes and We’ll Carry On Alright.

Both are recipients of the prestigious Princess Grace Award, an honor recognizing emerging artists in theater, dance, and film.
