Last week, some of our Promise Scholars attended the Mitchell Institute’s 2026 Gala. It was a wonderful evening of connection, inspiration, and networking as scholars mingled with industry leaders, alumni, and peers from across the state.

At USM, we are immensely proud of the powerful synergy between Promise Scholarship Program and $10K Scholarship Award for Maine H.S. seniors. Since 2020, 29 exceptional students have earned the distinct honor of being connected to both programs - including four scholars awarded this year.

Both programs share a deeply aligned mission: unlocking opportunities for talented and motivated Maine students as they pursue higher education. Seeing our Promise Scholars expand their professional horizons and build lifelong networks through the Mitchell Institute reminds us just how bright Maine’s future truly is.

Our USM Promise Scholars ventured to the sidelines of Fitzpatrick Stadium to catch a ⚽️Portland Hearts of Pine⚽️🌲** match! From sitting bench-side as the players took the field to hanging out with Monty the Moose, and hearing Promise alum ~A.I.G~ from the class ‘25 sing the national anthem, our newest cohort got a true taste of the vibrant Portland community.

The Promise Immersion Week a signature program designed to welcome our incoming scholars through workshops, events, and team-building activities. Our goal is to ensure every scholar feels deeply connected to campus, their peers, and the greater Portland area right as they kick off their college journey.

Move-in day is officially here, and our newest cohort of USM Promise Scholars has landed! 🎒✨

After months of anticipation, we teamed up with our TRIO friends to welcome 40 incredible students to campus early for our annual Immersion Week.

From workshop deep-dives into campus resources to cohort-building bonding and epic Portland adventures, this week is all about building community, making connections, and ensuring USM feels like home right from day one. 💙

10 years ago, it was just a vision. Today, it’s a legacy.

As we look toward the 10th anniversary of the USM Promise Scholarship in 2027, we gathered yesterday with some of the original trailblazers who first brought this dream to life a decade ago: former USM President Dr. Glenn Cummings, former USM Foundation President George Campbell, the McGoldrick Family, and many of the donors and community members who made it possible.

We were especially honored to recognize special guest Lauren Sterling, whose fervent research, grant writing, and donor advocacy lifted the Promise Scholarship off the ground when it was still just an idea. To celebrate her foundational impact, we presented Lauren with a perpetual plaque named in her honor—the Sterling Achiever Award—presented by Jacob Curtis, the award’s 2024 recipient! The award will be displayed in the Promise lounge on the third floor of the McGoldrick Center for years to come.

This annual award honors a Promise Scholar who demonstrates the very qualities Lauren brought to the program’s start: clear vision, unwavering perseverance, and a genuine passion for their education and career goals.

Thank you to everyone who helped turn a vision into something tangible for so many students. Here’s to 10 years of promise, progress, and community. 💙 Graduating futures, changing lives.

🗳️ Student Leadership in Action! 🗳️

Huge congratulations to .morello and for sharing their vision at last night’s Student Body President Debate! The duo of Promise Scholars are running for Student Body President and Vice-President.

Makayla, ‘28, is majoring in Elementary Education while Alexa, ’29, is studying English with a Teacher Education Pathway. They shared their vision for the future of USM is built on three core pillars: (1) advocating for every single student voice, (2) creating more daytime programming tailored for our commuter community, and (3) ensuring every student feels a true sense of representation at USM.

The Future of Law! We are incredibly proud to celebrate , Promise alum ‘25, who presented oral arguments before the Maine Supreme Court in a mock trial today.

Joseph was selected by the Maine Law faculty as one of the most articulate legal orators in his class - a testament to his dedication, sharp intellect, and hard work.

Some of current USM Promise Scholars on the pre-law track were right there in the gallery! They attended the mock proceedings to cheer on Joseph and get a firsthand look at where their own journeys can lead.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Joseph Inabanza, Promise alum ‘25, who presented oral arguments before the Maine Supreme Court in a mock trial today.

Joseph was selected by the Maine Law faculty as one of the most articulate legal orators in his class - a testament to his dedication, sharp intellect, and hard work.

Some of current USM Promise Scholars on the pre-law track were right there in the gallery! They attended the mock proceedings to cheer on Joseph and get a firsthand look at where their own journeys can lead.
