Portland State is home to numerous choral ensembles: Chamber Choir, Thorn Choir (TB choir), Rose Choir (SA choir), University Choir, and our Community Chorus. The Portland State Chamber Choir is a dedicated group of fine singers and choral music lovers. The Chamber Choir provides challenging musical education to students, as well as personally enriching and rewarding performance opportunities. Sin
gers in the choir must rise to meet the challenging demands of teamwork, ensemble, time commitment, and travel. As an ambassador within the Arts community, the Chamber Choir seeks to strengthen the reputation of the Portland State Music Department, both locally and around the world. Founded in the Fall of 2011, the Rose and Thorn choirs were renamed in 2018 to de-gender the choirs. The University Choir was the very first music ensemble created at Portland State University, and continues to be Portland State’s non-auditioned choir open to all, and often numbers over 100 singers. They sing a wide variety of literature from Classical music to spirituals, gospel music, and maybe even some pop songs. They meet once a week on Wednesdays or Thursdays. The Community Chorus is returning in fall of 2022. It is a special ensemble made up of PSU faculty, staff, and alumni from around the university community. Virtually all of the singers come from outside the music department, from Information Technology to Mathematics to Campus Rec.
