This fall's Conversations & Connections program is taking place on October 20th, 2026, from 4:30-6:30 pm on the second floor of the McGoldrick Center on our Portland Campus, and we'd love for you to join us. We're thrilled to welcome Mary Keiser, CPCU, Senior Vice President and U.S. Food & Beverage Practice Leader at HUB International.

Mary will share her insights about the unique challenges facing businesses across the food and beverage industry, from product contamination and recall to supply chain issues and packaging liability. She'll discuss how these organizations can think about risk at the enterprise level: not simply as something to manage, but as an essential part of strategic decision-making, resilience, and long-term success.

How much do Portland's local minor league sports actually generate for our local economy?

🚨 $110 million!

A study led by the School of Business professor Richard Bilodeau and USM Cutler Institute researcher Caroline Paras examined the economic impact of Portland's four minor league sports teams. It found that the teams created more than $110 million in annual economic activity and provided more than 900 jobs throughout Maine.

✨ Throwback Thursday to CEO Panel Night ✨

Last week, our students were joined by Portland-area CEOs to discuss the challenges and triumphs of growing a successful business. Brought to campus by our Women In Business club, this was a night of thoughtful advice and encouragement to reach for the stars.

Women In Business is just one of many student organizations designed to help stay engaged outside the classroom. Valuing practical application of business skills, the USM School of Business works to provide opportunities to put the skills we teach in the classroom into practice.

🏀 Business Students Outside the Classroom 🏀

Zhangir Dyussenov, junior Sport Management student, balled out at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup this September in Wuhan, China.

Representing Kazakhstan on the U23 team, Zhangir played in four games against Germany, Serbia, Tonga, and the Netherlands.

"It was surreal to play on the world stage. Having my name called while walking out of the tunnel, I really felt like I was representing something bigger than myself."

With a goal of starting a sports agency of his own, Zhangir hopes to help Kazakhstan players like himself access more opportunity in the sport. And the USM School of Business Sport Management program will lay-out the skills to get there.

✅ Meet the Firms was a success! ✅

The School of Business was well represented, with students from a wide range of business majors showing up for last night's Meet the Firms event.

You can count on USM School of Business students to show out!
➡️ Over 40 students and 9 accounting firms took part in our Meet the Firms event last night.
➡️ More USM students participated than last year, with about a 15% larger crowd.

A BIG thank you to all the firms who visited us to meet our future accountants!
