Our strong liberal and fine arts programs provide the heart and soul of the undergraduate experience at the University of Southern Maine. As a whole, we are dedicated to providing the best comprehensive education possible to

our students while providing a learning environment that cultivates independent thought. We strive to provide our graduates with the critical thinking and analytical skills they will need to succeed after graduation. We encourage our students to take courses in departments outside of their major to better prepare them for their chosen career path. We offer a transformative curriculum that ranges from exploring the theoretical frameworks that shape the social sciences to music performance and web design. Students in our programs are given the opportunity to build skills and portfolios through international travel opportunities, internships, and service learning projects in the community. Our goal is to educate our students to be global citizens with the capability to lead through understanding and compassion. The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Dean’s Office is located at 228 Deering Avenue on the Portland campus of USM. Students are always welcome to stop by to voice concerns or seek advice. We are here to make sure you have the best possible experience.

🚂🇺🇸 History came alive as Dr. Ashley Towle (History & Women & Gender Studies) and Dr. Adam Schmitt (History) led students beyond the classroom to the very ground where America’s most transformative conflict unfolded.

From the Lincoln Monument and Arlington National Cemetery in D.C. to the battlefields of Harpers Ferry, Antietam, and Gettysburg, our students didn’t just read about history—they experienced it. They also dove deep into the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the American Civil War Museum, engaging with the past in powerful, personal ways.

Keep an eye out for upcoming CAHS travel courses!

Mass timber is featured prominently in the Crewe Center, and is one of the reasons the building earned LEED Gold certification. Besides being beautiful, it often contains less than half the embodied carbon as steel or concrete, yet is strong enough to replace them, and is fire resistant. That’s what we call a win-win-win! Stop by and check it out!

Big news for sustainability and the arts at USM 🌿🎭

The Crewe Center for the Arts has officially earned LEED Gold certification, recognizing its innovative, environmentally responsible design and performance. Opened in fall 2025, the building is home to music, theater, dance, visual arts and more on the Portland campus, and is now one of nine LEED-certified buildings across USM.

From mass timber construction that lowers carbon impact to bird-safe glass and energy-efficient systems, the Crewe Center proves that creative spaces can also lead the way in sustainability, reducing energy costs by 53% and outdoor water use by 100%.
