On Friday December 3, twelve students from Baxter Academy joined us on campus in order to complete an abridged version of the Green River project. The goal of the project is to identify pollution sources leading to algae growth and fish kill. Our HON 113 (Honors Principles of Chemistry) students guided the budding high school scientists through a series of four modules, investigating TSS and turbidity, pH and conductivity, nitrate concentration, and dissolved oxygen levels. Through this community outreach, we have strengthened ties to the local community, and it is our sincere hope that this collaboration with Baxter Academy can continue in the future!

Much deserved congratulations go to Assistant Professor of Physics Brandon Eberly who is part of the recent MicroBoone experiment that made international headlines yesterday. “The Microboone experiment is based at the US Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois - just outside Chicago,” according to a BBC story. “But physicists from many countries are involved with the project. Their work is helping scientists deepen their understanding of the particles that make up the universe.

A new chapter in physics is here, says a team that hunted for a key building block of the Universe.
