The University of Portland, an independently governed Catholic university guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross, addresses significant questions of human concern through disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies of the arts, sciences, and humanities and through studies in majors and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. As a diverse community of scholars dedicated to

excellence and innovation, we pursue teaching and learning, faith and formation, service and leadership in the classroom, residence halls, and the world. Because we value the development of the whole person, the University honors faith and reason as ways of knowing, promotes ethical reflection, and prepares people who respond to the needs of the world and its human family.

University of Portland School of Business has announced a new 3-To-Degree program, giving ambitious students an accelerated pathway to earn a traditional, full-credit bachelorโ€™s degree in business in just three years. Designed specifically for high-achieving high school graduates entering college with qualifying credits, the initiative significantly reduces tuition costs and accelerates career entry without compromising academic quality.

"High-achieving students shouldn't have to choose between saving time and getting a premier education," said Provost David Mengel, PhD. "Weโ€™re delivering a full-value, AACSB-accredited degree that prepares graduates to lead on day one."

The 3-To-Degree pathway is available across all School of Business majors, offering unparalleled flexibility compared to other accelerated programs.

Students in the program benefit from dedicated academic advising, along with full access to UP's faculty mentorship, career counseling, executive networking, and study abroad opportunities.

Erik Spoelstra โ€™92 was introduced to the special needs community roughly 10 years ago when one of his neighbors invited him to a fundraiser at the Miami Learning Experience, returning to the school again and again until, before he knew it, Spoelstra was a fabric of the community.

Three thousand miles away in Portland, one of Spoelstraโ€™s old UP buddies was growing attached to the special needs community through a different source: His daughter.

The second child and only girl of Kasey and Jami (Costello) Flicker โ€™96, Sophie had a rare and incurable genetic disease called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), which causes non-cancerous tumors or lesions to grow in the brain and other areas of the body. Sophie was having hundreds of tiny seizures every day, and the infantile spasms were disrupting her cognitive development.

Flicker and Spoelstra just missed each other at UP, but their relationship stretches back to their 20s. They reunited during the Heatโ€™s championship run in the early 2010s and Flicker will never forget how Spoelstra, at the height of the pressure-cooker, made a point of asking about Sophie and her condition.

โ€œErik always found the time, even in the depths of the Finals, to learn more about Sophie and offer compassion and empathy to my situation,โ€ Flicker said.

Years later, Flicker hatched an idea for Spoelstra to host a basketball camp for Sophie and other special needs athletes. The Heat Basketball Clinic, as it wraps up its third year, has blossomed into a signature event for the community.
