Jane Austen Young Filmmakers Contest

Since its founding in 2017, the Young Filmmakers Contest has thrived as the first-ever short film competition focused on Jane Austen. We are celebrating our 10th anniversary by inviting your students who love Jane Austen and filmmaking to take part and submit an entry.

There is no better time for your students to participate in this cinematic event around Jane Austen, as they discover how her genius in novel writing translates so well to the screen. Last year, on the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth, we were astounded by an unprecedented outpouring of fine films from around the world. We hope that this year will be even better.

The object is to encourage study of and appreciation for Jane Austen through visual media. Our entries, limited to five minutes in length, have spanned categories including documentary, animation, adaptation, and satire. Initially created for high school and college students, the contest is now open to all amateurs aged 30 or under. The contest is free to enter and you may enter more than one film.

Winners receive $600, $300 or $200, a year’s membership in JASNA, and valuable feedback on their work from the judges. We attract the best of judges; last year Andrew Davies, Lindsay Doran, and four other renowned actors and authors sat on the panel.

The entry deadline for the Young Filmmakers Contest is June 29, 2026. More information and registration can be found here: jasna.org/programs/young-filmmakers-contest/. We are also on Instagram .

Please post the attached poster, encourage your students to register and participate in this contest, and help us raise a new generation of Jane Austen scholars and enthusiasts! Email us back for more information and thanks!

Sincerely,

Alicia Lomas-Gross
Screenwriter and JASNA member

Post-Graduation Career

We're hiring an entry-level generalist to work directly with our
founder and chief of staff, shipping AI-assisted improvements across the business. Marketing, operations, fulfillment, finance, all of it.

Not an engineering or technical hire.

We're looking for someone curious and dependable, who has been quietly tinkering with AI on their own for the last year or two, and who wants to grow into the work with us.

I'm teaching a senior-level advanced filmmaking class, and the student teams are looking for unproduced film scripts. While they may not be positioned to pay story rights, they would provide film credits and a copy of the production to the screenwriter. If interested, please DM me and provide a logline I can share with the teams.
