Nikolaus Loening, professor of chemistry, has received a three-year, $335,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to investigate how proteins work together to transport essential materials, keeping cells healthy and functioning! 👏

The award, from NSF’s Chemistry of Life Processes program, will support Loening’s research on dynein, a motor protein that acts as a tiny cellular transport system, hauling cargo along pathways inside cells. Dynein relies on several partner proteins to do its work, including dynactin, but scientists still have much to learn about how those interactions are regulated.

This summer, Everett Holbrook BA ’27 traded his home state of California for New York City this summer, getting a firsthand look at the world of finance as an intern with wealth management firm Legend Capital. Founded by Adam Merino BA ’05, a member of the Lewis & Clark Board of Trustees and the Bates Center Advisory Board, the firm has given Holbrook the chance to put his on- and off-campus experiences to work—from preparing weekly news briefings to designing an estate plan and portfolio.

This summer, economics major Nhan Han BA ‘27 interned with New York Green Bank, the nation’s largest green bank investing in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure!

At his internship, he supported work at the intersection of climate, finance, and community impact. His experience with the Bates Center - Lewis & Clark internship course helped him explore the industry, better articulate his interests and experiences, and clarify the career path he hopes to pursue. On campus, Nhan also serves as president of Investment & Cryptocurrency Club and as a resident advisor for the Environmental Action Living Learning Community (LLC)!
