Student Community Engagement Center

Student Community Engagement Center The Student Community Engagement Center is the hub for civic engagement at Portland State. Welcome to the Student Community Engagement Center!

Located in SMSU M103 (in the Hub for Service & Sustainability), we are the hub for volunteer opportunities and programs on campus and in the Portland community. We run several programs: The SLS Member Team, Mentor Alder Portland State (MAPS), Alternative Spring Break, large scale Days of Service, Serve Your City/Serve Your Campus projects, and more. By liking this page, you will get notifications

of upcoming events and application deadlines. It does not necessarily mean you are a member of one of the leadership teams -- generally that membership is decided by an application process. If you're looking to volunteer, either to fulfill hours for a class, explore something you're passionate about, or just to meet people in a different setting, stop by our office or email us at [email protected]. Year Long Programs:
Student Leaders for Service
MAPS - Mentor: Alder and Portland State

Term-Long Programs:
ASB – Alternative Spring Break (includes pre-trip meetings)

Day Long Programs:
Portland State of Mind Day of Service - October
MLK Day of Service - January

Sign up to our last conversation project of the term! We are partnering with ASPSU, Menasa, Cultural reasource centers, and oregon humanities to bring students and community members together for an open and engaging conversation about interpersonal conflict, communication, and growth. LINK IN BIO

Interpersonal conflict and disagreement are part of being in relationship with others, but many of us fear conflict. Motivated by many factors, including cultural norms, concern for social consequences, and personal safety, many of us avoid it. What might we learn and how might we grow by making more room for conflict?

Join us tommorow for one of last service events of the term! As a group, we will remove noxious weeds, including English ivy, clematis, and Himalayan/Armenian blackberry. By removing invasive, non-native plant species, we will help to support wildlife, water runoff, and prevent erosion. Volunteer tasks will include hiking uneven terrain and the use of small tools. Gloves, tools, supervision, and directions will be provided. LINK IN BIO

Student Leaders for Service is a year-long leadership program that facilitates PSU students’ involvement in both the Portland State and greater Portland communities. Students serve at a community partner site on a weekly basis, supporting the work of the community partner and bringing its mission back to the PSU campus. Whether your passion is education, hunger, housing, health, racial justice, sustainability, or something else, SLS positions range every year in focus and can apply to all sorts of interests and majors. The Student Community Engagement Office is seeking enthusiastic Spanish-speaking applicants for this "Team Lead" position to support and lead a team of peers to continue a new English/Spanish garden/STEM club started by PSU students at Alder Elementary School this past year, helping kids develop science, math, and social-emotional skills through hands on activities in and outside of the garden! Interpersonal conflict and disagreement are part of being in relationship with others, but many of us fear conflict. Motivated by many factors, including cultural norms, concern for social consequences, and personal safety, many of us avoid it. What might we learn and how might we grow by making more room for conflict? What skills do we need to responsibly engage in conflict? How can shifting our relationship to conflict offer us new perspectives about ourselves and the groups we belong to? This community conversation is an opportunity to reflect on our relationships to interpersonal conflict outside of where we might most often encounter it, like the heated context of an argument at the dinner table or online. Facilitator Emily Squires will lead a judgement- and jargon-free discussion of what we mean when we say conflict, considering how interpersonal conflict shapes our lives and tools to use when experiencing it. For over 120 years, Portland Parks and Recreation has been tending to, protecting, and expanding Portland's green spaces. Portland's parks, public places, and natural areas are essential for connecting people to place, self, and others, giving life to the city. Come be a part of the organization that makes it all possible!

Do you love working with kids? Hang out with the kindergarteners from Alder as they visit PSU and get a feel for "being at college"!
Join us for a morning of fun as 60+ kindergarteners from Alder Elementary descend on the PSU campus for a morning! Students will split into groups to help three classes of kindergarteners "experience college" for day. You'll help kiddos navigate a student activities tabling fair in the morning, sit with them as they eat their lunch and talk to them about what they love to do and what you love about college, and then support them as they rotate through some short hands-on activities designed to get them engaged and excited about the idea of college. Other times, she is upstairs helping to keep the shoe room organized as new shoes are donated. Sometimes she gets to help pick out clothes that will be given to those coming from difficult situations in need of support. Every once in a while, she helps redecorate The Shopp by changing mannequins, swapping items on display, and ensuring everything looks orderly and intentional. ....Read more on our new Blog!
