When students have the right support, possibilities become opportunities.

For students, building a career doesn’t begin at graduation. It starts with the connections, guidance, and experiences they gain throughout their time at Portland State.

For Eder Falfan, Management & Leadership ’27, one of the most valuable lessons from The School of Business Career Center was the importance of connecting with faculty and staff about his interests and ambitions. Those conversations helped Eder broaden his horizons and take the next step in his professional journey: securing an internship with Cambridge Real Estate Services.

His advice to fellow students: “Broaden your horizons, and speak with faculty about your interests and ambitions.”

Eder’s story is one example of the impact that career support and a strong campus community can have on students. Through career coaching, connections, and resources, The School of Business Career Center helps students turn their goals into action and prepare for what comes next.

At The School of Business, the Career Center helps students develop the confidence, skills, and professional connections needed to pursue internships and careers they may have once thought were out of reach. For Ashley Cortez Aguirre, Marketing '27, working with the Career Center encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone and apply for competitive internships. That confidence led her to secure an internship with Avenue5 Residential, where she is gaining valuable industry experience.

Ashley shares this advice with fellow students: "Just apply. You'll be surprised by the opportunities that come from it. Don't be scared!""

Congratulations to Ji Woon (June) Ryu, who is the recipient of this year's Young Scholar Award from the Association of Korean Management Scholars (AKMS), officially titled the 2026 MK-AKMS Young Scholar Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize AKMS junior faculty who have demonstrated the highest achievement as a young scholar and have made significant contributions to management research. This award also intends to promote the career development of young scholars in the Korean academic community. The winner of the award will have a record of high-quality and impactful research publications and professional activities.

At The School of Business, career development is about more than preparing students for their first job. It’s about creating connections, building confidence, and providing the resources students need to navigate their professional journeys.

For Isabella Cannelos (Human Resource Management ’27), support from The School of Business Career Center helped her strengthen her professional presence, develop effective networking strategies, and build meaningful connections with industry professionals. Through her involvement with the Human Resource Management Association (HRMA) student club, Isabella expanded her network and secured a Talent Acquisition Internship with Lam Research Corporation.

Isabella shared how building relationships and getting involved helped create new opportunities: “Join a club to earn recognition and network. I got my internship because the hiring manager was a PSU alumnus and knew about the HRMA (student) club; he also knew some of the people I'd been networking with. It can be a small world if you put yourself out there.”

Strengthening global networks to drive real-world business impact.

When academic institutions collaborate across borders, the benefits extend beyond the classroom: stronger faculty connections, broader professional networks and new opportunities for advanced business education.

As part of this work, The School of Business MSGSCM Academic Director Daniel Wong and Assistant Dean of Student Success Becky Sanchez are in discussions with HUTECH - Đại học Công nghệ Tp.HCM in Vietnam to explore collaboration across postgraduate programs, including the MBA and Master of Science in Finance (MSF).

For Matthew Rodgers, Management & Leadership '26, the resources and guidance provided by The School of Business Career Center helped him strengthen his professional skills, build confidence, and prepare for his next step after graduation. His efforts led to a position in the Finance Rotational Program at Precision Castparts Corp.

Matthew’s advice for students entering the workforce highlights the importance of preparation and perspective: “Do the little things that differentiate yourself from the other candidates. Be professional, presentable, and excited. Don't be discouraged. With the right mindset there's no such thing as failure, only feedback.”

Spotted near the Karl Miller Center: one of Portland's newest (and most colorful) residents. 🐦‍⬛🎨

This crow is part of "Wildwood: Follow the Crows," a brand-new free public art trail that launched this Friday, Aug. 7. It features 30 hand-painted crow sculptures, each designed by a different local or regional artist, scattered across downtown Portland business districts, neighborhood parks, and even the real Wildwood Trail in Forest Park.

The trail celebrates LAIKA Studios upcoming stop-motion film "Wildwood," in theaters Oct. 23, based on the novel by Portland musician Colin Meloy and illustrated by Portland artist Carson Ellis.

The trail is free and runs through Oct. 30 — you can track down all 30 sculptures using the companion app or a printed map. Once the trail wraps, all the crows will be auctioned off, with every dollar going to OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

So next time you're heading into KMC, look around — you might just walk right past a piece of Portland art history. 💛

As Vice President of Digital and Innovation for the Portland Trail Blazers, David Long has helped shape how emerging technologies create value across the organization.

On September 11, Long will bring his experiences to the Strategic Leadership in the Age of AI, a one-day executive program from Portland State University's School of Business designed for leaders navigating AI's growing impact on business.

During his session, David will explore the difference between using AI to capture value and using it to create value. He'll share the "lunch and launch" approach his team used to drive AI adoption, why they stopped measuring hours saved and started tracking how those hours were reinvested, and what it took to move AI initiatives from stalled experiments to meaningful organizational change. Participants will also take part in a hands-on exercise,so you will leave with something to try on Monday.

Designed for CEOs, senior executives, business leaders, and decision-makers, Strategic Leadership in the Age of AI moves beyond theory to help participants lead confidently in an AI-enabled world.
