Please join us Thursday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. on the 7th floor of Glickman Library for "Is There A Q***r Culture?" We'll examine issues such as: Is there a community and what does it want/need? Does it span the diverse identities? What is the role of queer-only spaces, organizations? And more. There will be refreshments, and groups are encouraged to bring their own flyers and brochures to distribute.

The Fall 2018 semester is off to a great start here at the USM Libraries at the University of Southern Maine !
We are so glad to have a familiar face back Special Collections, our fantastic Graduate Assistant Andrea Harkins. Andrea is processing the Gerald Talbot Collection (which you can learn more about below). She is finding all sorts of fascinating items as she works - here she is to tell you more!
______________________________________________
The Special Collections department, on the 6th floor of the Glickman library, is a resource here for you. Housing rare materials, including books, manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts, you will find material for your research needs, and far more. For example, this letter signed by Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as this poem by a school student, are two of many unexpected treasures found in the substantial Gerald E. Talbot Collection.
As a Graduate Assistant I have been working to organize the materials in this collection so that they are available to you. While doing this work I have come across an incredible amount of material that I've realized could be useful not only to students interested in history and political science but also in areas such as women's studies, art, and child development/education, etc.
The two items I chose to share with you today struck me because, despite the large amount of civil rights and Martin Luther King material I have worked with in this collection, I was still surprised to find a signed letter from MLK to Gerald Talbot. I also was moved by the words of the children who, in a school contest for MLK day, wrote what Martin Luther King, Jr. meant to them. After reading these children's words I paused to think about what we do have to be thankful for (due to the work of people such as MLK, Gerald Talbot, and so many more) as well as the work that still needs to be done as the civil rights landscape continues to be shaped.

Today's the day - but don't worry, we've got one last cast photo from the original production! Here's Diane Elze DIESEL and Dale McCormick ANITA, members of the QU**RS gang. "Quiet down and listen! Sometimes I think we treat each other worse than the Hets treat us. Now, we could get a lotta recognition for this. Hey we could end up rubbin' shoulders with the classy group in New York, what is it?...The National Gay Task Force? Who knows, someday I could even be president--it's the craze these days for g**s to be in high places."

We are so proud of all of our 2018 graduates - but even more than that, we are sad to see them go.

The JBS Center was fortunate enough to have Stone Coast MFA recipient Anthony Marvullo for multiple semesters.

Before Anthony left to Do Great Things, he wrote one last post. Here it is - we know you'll enjoy it!

The Howard Solomon Collection documents the art, activism, and scholarship of Howard Solomon, spanning the late 1960s to 2017. Because Howard was the LGBTQ+ Collection scholar-in-residence from 2002 to 2008, much of the collection’s material acts as a survey of the larger collection and serves as a great starting point for those interested in LGBTQ+ Maine history in the late twentieth and very early twenty-first centuries.

One fun, interactive, tactile section of the Howard Solomon Collection contains pins, buttons, and T-shirts, collected or worn by Howard for activism and messaging. Here now are some of those pins, displaying logos from ACT-UP and Portland Pride, and messages from many anti-discrimination efforts in Portland. Also of note: a pin from the 1996 display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in Washington DC and a commemorative pin of a 29 cent AIDS awareness stamp.

Come learn more about LG MS 45—The Howard Solomon Collection—at USM’s Special Collections! Just go up to the sixth floor of the library, enter the glassed-in foyer, put down your coffee, and ring the doorbell. Someone will be with you momentarily. Special Collections is open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 1:00 and 5:00 PM.

Call for information: GAY SIDE STORY

In May 1983, an intrepid, creative group wrote and performed Gay Side Story, a parody of a well known Broadway musical, as part of the 10th Gay Symposium.

USM's LGBTQ+ Collection has items from the only performance, including a video, scripts, playbills, a costume, and photographs.

Please help us find more material or information and plan a celebratory event in April 2018. If you have items or were part of the production PLEASE CONTACT SUSIE BOCK at
207-780-4269, [email protected].
