Congratulations to Clarkson Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Prashant Athavale! The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has awarded Prashant a $66,215 grant for "Restoration of Orientation Data from Polycrystalline Materials." The funding will be used for research to improve the understanding of scanning electron microscope images of metals used in manufacturing and construction, as well as other imaging techniques, like high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy and micro-CT scans.

Congratulations to mathematics freshman Peter Lef on being selected for the National Institute of Standards and Technology's SURF program at Gaithersburg in the Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) for this Summer! He will be working on developing computational tools for image analysis. The project will involve machine learning and image analysis tools for various application domains.

Peter is currently working with his advisor, Dr. Prashant Athavale, on developing imaging algorithms to reconstruct orientation data of polycrystalline materials.

Davis retired in 1993 after 40 years of outstanding service to Clarkson and its students. In addition to being the only faculty member to be honored three times as Outstanding Faculty Advisor, he served Clarkson as an assistant and associate professor of mathematics, as chairman of the mathematics department, as dean of student affairs, and as associate dean of science.
