📚✨ And just like that, we're back!

The first day of classes has brought plenty of energy to campus! From reconnecting with friends and meeting new professors to finding your way around campus (with a little help from our student volunteers) and dodging the occasional hissing goose, there’s no shortage of first-day moments to celebrate. A tradition that’s uniquely Potsdam! Faculty, staff, and returning students packed the Quad to cheer on our newest Bears during the New Student Funnel, sending the Class of 2030 into Orientation with plenty of energy and Potsdam pride! 🐻🎉

Today, they walked beneath the iconic Satterlee Hall clocktower as first-year students. Four years from now, they’ll walk back to this very spot as graduates. 🎓🥹

🎉A new year, a new class, and a whole lot of Potsdam spirit! 💙💛

Move-In Day brought plenty of excitement to campus today as our newest students arrived and began settling into their new home. Our student-athletes and campus community were there to lend a hand, making the process a little smoother and a lot more welcoming. 💪✨

Once everyone was settled in, students had the chance to kick off the year with our annual “Sundaes with Suzanne”—a sweet afternoon filled with ice cream and new connections.

Here’s to the start of an incredible year and welcome to the Class of 2030!✨

SUNY Potsdam is welcoming 22 new students through the Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)—the 57th EOP cohort in our history.

Before fall classes even started, these first-year and transfer students spent four weeks living on campus, taking college-level classes, and building the support network that will carry them through their degree.

"EOP students bring incredible resilience, drive and perspective to our campus," said Program Director Diana Valdez '17 & '25. "Their presence here is not only a reflection of their potential—but also of what becomes possible when access and support are prioritized."

Since 1969, EOP has helped generations of students—many the first in their families to attend college—earn their degree.

Even during the summer months, The Crane School of Music is buzzing with creativity and energy! 🎶

We recently caught up with graduate students in music education at Crane to explore how their coursework is helping them become innovative, confident leaders in the classroom.

In Dr. Jon Schaller’s Creativity and Problem-Solving in Ensemble Settings, students created soundscapes, arranged cover songs, recomposed existing works, and composed scenes for a musical—all while exploring new ways to bring creative music-making into their classrooms.

In Dr. Christine Hoerning’s Visual Music Performance, students examined the relationship between sound and images in film and video art, creating and performing original works inspired by short films.

Through hands-on, collaborative experiences like these, Crane’s graduate students are expanding their creative toolkits and finding new ways to inspire creativity in the classroom. 🎵

Defensive tactics 101! 👊 High school students in SUNY Potsdam's inaugural Criminal Justice Camp spent the morning learning self-defense fundamentals from local police officer Bank Soikum and University Police officer JR Collette. Part of a weeklong hands-on program run by the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, giving Grades 9-12 students a real look at careers in law enforcement.

SUNY Potsdam women's hockey head coach Olivia Cook '24 just spent three days working at the Montreal Canadiens development camp—one of only nine guest coaches invited to the NHL team's camp. 🐻🏒

A standout hockey player in her youth, Cook went on to achieve great success as a D1 athlete and make a significant impact in both her Mohawk community of Akwesasne and in remote First Nation communities throughout Canada. She enrolled at SUNY Potsdam as a student in 2022 to finish a public health degree. By her second week on campus, she was an assistant coach. A year later, she was head coach.

Since then, she’s been turning the program around: last season the Bears went 11-13-2 and earned their first-ever SUNY Athletic Conference tournament berth. She finished her degree in 2024, walking at commencement after waiting over a decade for the moment.

Now Montreal's development camp has her on the radar of NHL and PWHL insiders. Proud to call her one of ours. 💚
