From participant to leader. 🎓

When Sadie Brown '26 arrived at SUNY Potsdam as a freshman, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) was there to welcome her. By senior year, she was the one doing the welcoming — mentoring fellow students through EOP and TRIO Student Support Services, helping them find their footing in college life and academics.

That's the power of programs that invest in students. 💛

It starts with a single word—but it’s part of a larger transformation in literacy education. Through the Reading Ready program, SUNY Potsdam students have been working one-on-one with local children to build foundational reading skills and confidence.

SUNY Potsdam is one of just 34 colleges nationwide that has been implementing the Reading Ready curriculum in local schools, while also contributing data to the Reading Institute. The initiative began in spring 2024, when the first two SUNY Potsdam students completed the training and worked as literacy tutors at Lawrence Avenue Elementary School. Since then, Dr. Marta Albert and Cary Boles have expanded the program, integrating it fully into Block I placements for the College's teacher education students.

Literacy changes everything, and so does great professional development. 📖

We proudly welcomed 80 educators from across the region to the inaugural Bear Necessities of Literacy Conference, bringing together teachers from Watertown to Salmon River, N.Y., for a day of research-informed learning and real classroom impact.

From a keynote address by Jennifer Lynn Hoffman to workshops led by Alumni like Amara Pascuito '13 & '18 and Johnathan Hirschey '05 & '06, the day was grounded in both expertise and experience. Attendees walked away with practical strategies ready to use immediately with their PK-12 students.

This is what investing in educators looks like. We can't wait for what's next.✨

It was the pandemic, and Ryan Godfrey ’28 was at home, bored, and looking for ways to stay creatively engaged.

“I really missed playing in band—that was my life in eighth grade. I had so much time on my hands that I decided I might as well make some of my own music,” he said.

Godfrey sent his completed piece to his band teacher, Crane alumna Laura (Smith) Giorgio '05, who saw potential in his work and offered feedback on ways to improve his score.

“That kick-started my passion for composing. I’ve written 30 pieces of band music since then,” he said.

Now a sophomore in the music education program at The Crane School of Music, Godfrey continues to build on those early experiences. During the Spring 2026 semester, he composed “More Than This” for the Crane Wind Ensemble, led by Dr. Brian Doyle. Godfrey is one of only a handful of student composers whose work has been performed by major ensembles since Doyle began teaching at the College in 2006.

“Student compositions receiving such performances are uncommon,” said Doyle. “In my 20 years at Crane, I have only programmed four other student composer works. Ryan’s is the fifth.”

Other student composers whose work has been performed at Crane include Skye Hamilton Carranza’s “Blue Cherry Blossom” (2018), Jacob Ali’s “Dragon Ride” (2018), Ethan Cypress’s “Railway Bridge” (2015), and Christopher Nedimyer’s “Ben Nevis” (2009).

Now Godfrey joins those ranks—an especially notable accomplishment given that he is pursuing a degree in music education rather than composition.👨‍🏫🎺🎹
