It’s been a whirlwind week at SUNY Potsdam as we prepare to launch the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the College’s history. 🐻

It’s all about our students, and we’ve loved seeing alumni and donors on campus, sitting in on classes and leading mentoring sessions at the Lougheed Learning Commons.

Tomorrow, we announce Deeply Rooted, Future Focused: The Campaign for Potsdam, followed by the campus Bears Block Party. Then join us at 6 p.m. for the Festival of Lights:
✨ More than 8,000 lights across the Academic Quad
✨ Illuminated art installations by local artists and children
✨ Live music by SFM
✨ Glowing giveaways, activities and concessions
✨ A drone show set to music from the Crane School of Music archives at 8 p.m.

This summer, exercise science major Morgan Williams ’27 interned with ChildVision in Dublin, caring for horses and supporting equine therapy sessions for children with disabilities and special needs. 🐴She also visited 10 other countries while abroad. Now she's setting her sights on a career in sports medicine.

SUNY Potsdam is expanding its Advancing Completion through Engagement (ACE) program, with plans to grow enrollment by 50 students this fall to a total of 300. 🎓

Today, we hosted a roundtable with President Dr. Suzanne R. Smith, State Assemblyman Scott Gray, SUNY University Director for ASAP|ACE Dr. Jennifer Bashant, ACE Director Sean Partridge, Provost Dr. Susan Perkins ’93 and three students benefiting from the program.

ACE provides funding for textbooks, groceries and transportation, plus personalized advisement and career development. The results are clear: more than half of ACE students made the Dean’s or President’s List for Spring 2026, and 72% of the initial Spring 2024 cohort are set to graduate this year.

Thanks to $550,000 in new state funding, more Bears will have someone in their corner on the path to graduation.

The SUNY Potsdam women’s rugby team is on a roll! 🏉 The Lady Polecats have won 20 straight games and are ranked 9th in the nation among Division III teams by the National Collegiate Rugby Coaches Poll, all as a club sport.

Next up: the semifinals at Colgate on Oct. 24. Go Polecats!

After learning the ropes indoors at Maxcy Hall in Rock Climbing I, students in SUNY Potsdam's wilderness education program have taken the next step outdoors. 🧗

This fall, the Rock Climbing II class, taught by alumnus Matt Hosmer ‘05, has headed into the Adirondacks, from the sheer rock face at Azure Mountain to the more technical overhangs at South Colton Cliff. Along the way they’ve been sharpening their belaying, rope handling and movement on the rock, all with fall colors and High Peaks views in the backdrop.
