Thank you for using your compost buckets all year and being your most sustainable self! Please drop off your compost bins at the Earth Day celebration this coming Wednesday. If you can't make this time please contact Abby Miler, [email protected], to set up an alternative drop off time. Also we please ask that you rinse the buckets out or clean them to the best of your ability this is just for our storage purposes. These buckets are free to use, but only for a select amount of time. If a bucket is not returned there will be a charge. Thank you again for using the compost program this year!

Hello everyone!

Sustainability is one of the most important aspects of campus as it allows us to continue doing the things we love while taking care of our planet. The goal of this project is to highlight people around campus who have supported, are supporting, or will support sustainability through their actions. Those nominated will be highlighted on the Clarkson Sustainability Instagram, have the chance to be posted on the wall outside the ISE, and be entered into a raffle to be drawn at an Earth Day Event!

Intern Spotlight! Kyleigh, our Grounds Intern, had an amazing experience with one of their professors out in the field:

"I had the opportunity to go out in the field with one of my professors to survey two small ponds near Lake Clear in the Adirondacks using ground penetrating radar (GPR).

We’re looking for records of climate variation preserved in the sediment, and the GPR data will be paired with sediment cores that were collected earlier this year by Curt Stager and his team from Paul Smith’s College. One especially interesting aspect is that the ponds are close to Route 30, so we’re also looking to see whether there’s any evidence of road salt contamination. If present, it can appear on the GPR profiles as a dense lens near the bottom that disrupts radar wave transmission.

It was honestly one of the coolest hands-on experiences I’ve had at Clarkson so far."

In the photos, Kyleigh in black and green/yellow, Brian Carl (SUNY-P) in blue and Allen Gontz in black and orange. Great work Kyleigh!

Welcome to the Team Wednesday! This week, we'll be introducing Star!

Hi my name is Star and I’m a freshman Environmental sci and sustainability major :) I am a food/solid waste intern at the ISE so this means I help pick up compost every week, help with waste audits, and man the compost stations at some events on campus. My favorite thing about sustainability is making sure everyone has access to clean air, water, and neighborhoods, and protecting biodiversity. In my free time I like to run, hike, listen to or play music, or do creative things. If you ever have any questions about what you can or can’t compost or recycle, you can always ask me 🙃

Welcome to the Team Wednesday! This week, we'll be introducing Daniel Jarzembowski!

Daniel is a freshman ESS and Environmental Engineering Major in the Honors Program. He is one of our Solid Waste and Food Waste Interns in the ISE and helps coordinate our waste audits. He also makes sure that the compost around campus is being taken care of (make sure to compost properly! :) ). Dan loves to find new ways to minimize his impact on the environment, such as eating less meat and up cycling broken items. In his free time, he enjoys getting outdoors, hiking, alpine skiing, and creating/playing music. Happy composting!
