URSI: Undergraduate Research Summer Institute - Vassar College The Undergraduate Research Summer Institute is a full-time, 10 week immersive research program at VC.

About URSI
Every summer a vibrant summer science community is formed under the umbrella of the Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI). Approximately 60 students team up with over 30 faculty to engage in cutting-edge research on a wide variety of topics spanning the sciences. In this ten week, full-time, immersive research experience, students develop and execute research projects, particip

ate in scientific workshops, and enjoy a variety of social activities. In early Fall, URSI students and faculty come together with the wider community to present their research at the URSI Symposium. Students who participate in URSI are better prepared and motivated to secure employment in the science sector or pursue advanced degrees in the sciences, thereby helping to sustain a rich talent pool in critical areas of research and innovation. URSI students have gone on to present their research at regional and national meetings, and have published their work in a variety of publications, including top-tier scientific journals. All current Vassar students who will be continuing their studies during the semester following the URSI summer period are eligible to apply. Students who are members of groups historically underrepresented in the sciences are particularly encouraged to apply.

Images of a slab of TiO2 (specifically TiO2 rutile (110)), a key part of a dye-sensitized solar cell. In short, boronic acids look to be promising anchoring groups for dye molecules on TiO2 rutile surfaces, and our goal is to see how they bind to defects in the TiO2 crystal structure. Thus, one of the first things we did was build a computer model of a slab that had a defect (a missing oxygen atom), and this is what you see in the photos. The first photo shows a side view of the slab, while the second shows a bird’s-eye view of just the top layer of the crystal structure.
