Vassar College Asian Studies

Vassar College Asian Studies The Program in Asian Studies offers a multidisciplinary and global approach to studying the peoples and cultures of Asia.

This program takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the history, economics, politics, geography, languages and literatures, religions, societies, and cultures of the peoples of Asia. Major requirements provide in-depth studies by encouraging regional specialization (for example, East Asia, South Asia, West Asia, or Southeast Asia) as well as breadth by requiring a common introductory c

ourse, a senior seminar, and courses outside the student's chosen regional specialty. Majors are also required to achieve at least intermediate level competence in an Asian language and are encouraged to spend the junior year abroad. The program also offers a correlate sequence in Asian Studies.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the world strike, Vassar Asian American Studies Working Group (VASAM) has invited Professor Gary Y. Okihiro to Vassar for a workshop-lecture series on Asian American Studies and Third World Studies. The Third World Liberation Front rose in 1968 as a coalition of various ethnic student groups on college campuses in California in response to the Eurocentric education and lack of diversity at their respective universities. The movement most notably took place in San Francisco State College and the University of California, Berkeley.

"Asian American Studies: How It Changes Our Views of U.S. History and Society".
1:30-2:30pm/ Faculty Commons
Professor Okihiro will answer all questions related to ASAM Studies and share his own experience in advocating for ASAM.

"Third World Studies and World History: A Conversation"
4:00-5:30pm/Rocky 300
In light of the 50th anniversary of the Third World Strike, Professor Okihiro will lecture on the historical events of the Third World Movements and its global context.

VASAM is advocating for a comprehensive and consistent curriculum on Asian American Studies. The event is open to all student, faculties, and the public. To learn more about VASAM, here is our page: https://www.facebook.com/VassarASAM/?ref=br_rs
