Together, the Marist Heritage and Vegetable Garden tell the story of our community to those who walk through, stay for a while, or simply pass by on their way to class. Evoking the history of the College and of the Hudson River Valley, the gardens recall past designs while also projecting forward into new technologies and modes of experience. Both stimulating and soothing, a balance of materials, textures, shapes, colors, and sounds creates meditative spaces within our busy campus.

The Marist Vegetable Garden presents our seedlings for this growing season. Beginning late, we have a variety of leafy vegetables including bok choy, north pole lettuce, blue curled kale and red salad bowl lettuce. Turnips, radishes and green beans are part of this years crop too. Stop by the garden after you move-in or look for these tasty vegetables at the dining hall!

The Story of the Vegetable Garden

The vegetable garden began as a dual honors thesis project between myself and Alexa Kovlakas. Gathering inspiration from local farms and institutions such as the Poughkeepsie Farm Project, we began developing our own proposal. See our original design model below! Over the course of a year, the concept of the garden developed into a platform for academic and community engagement. Already, innovative projects are underway, which show the garden not only as an area to grow food, but also one where inter-disciplinary ideas are cultivated. These projects range from plant-based textile creation to campus-wide composting.

Look next Monday for “The Story of the Heritage Garden” and expect updates on the vegetable garden throughout this week!
