Prairie View A&M University is known for cultivating excellence, legacy, and lifelong connections—and for Ben ’71 and Rose ’71 Durant, it is also where a remarkable love story began.
On a joyful evening filled with laughter, music, and cherished memories, I joined family and friends to celebrate the Durants’ 55th wedding anniversary. The occasion was more than a milestone—it was a vibrant reflection of a legacy rooted in love and family tradition.
Though many in attendance were familiar with the couple’s enduring bond, the celebration revealed delightful insights into the personalities that have shaped their journey. Ben, Class of 1971, proved himself a natural performer, embracing the spotlight with a love for singing that energized the room. Rose, also Class of 1971, beamed with joy as she was serenaded, clearly savoring each heartfelt note. Their daughter, Lynnette Durant Ed.D, ’08, ’09, added to the evening’s charm with her enthusiasm for duets, while James Durant ’08 brought laughter and levity with his natural comedic flair.
Yet beyond the karaoke and celebration, it is the story of how it all began that truly captures the spirit of the Durants’ journey.
On October 5, 1969, at precisely 1:00 p.m., Ben and Rose met in front of the Prairie View A&M University student union—a campus moment that would become the foundation of a lifetime together. Less than a year later, they were engaged on May 25, 1970. On May 29, 1971, they said “I do,” beginning a marriage that has now spanned more than five decades. In a testament to their determination and shared vision, the couple celebrated their academic achievement alongside their union—graduating on Sunday after celebrating their wedding the following Saturday.
Their story is one of commitment, partnership, and enduring love—values deeply aligned with the Prairie View A&M University spirit. Through the years, they have not only built a life together but have also inspired the next generation, creating a true legacy family within the PVAMU community.
As loved ones took turns sharing reflections during the anniversary celebration, a common theme emerged: the Durants’ love is both timeless and inspiring. It is a reminder that some of life’s most meaningful journeys begin in the simplest of moments—and that when nurtured with care, respect, and joy, those beginnings can grow into a legacy that touches generations.
Seldom have I attended a PVAMU home basketball game without spotting the Durants in their season ticket seats, enthusiastically cheering on the team. I always make it a point to spend a few minutes with them at every game.
The Durant family embodies everything that makes PVAMU special—connection, pride, and a tradition of excellence that continues to thrive.
It's a PVAMU love story that has stood test of time: Happy Anniversary to Ben ’71 and Rose ’71 Durant!
