Professor Joshua Guild joined Dr. Greene‑Hayes for a conversation examining Greene‑Hayes’s first book, "Underworld Work: Black Atlantic Religion Making in Jim Crow New Orleans"(University of Chicago Press, 2025). The discussion explored the book’s rethinking of African American religious history, with particular attention to the development and evolution of Africana spiritual traditions in Jim Crow–era New Orleans.

The AAS Faculty‑Graduate Seminar is an intimate intellectual community bringing together faculty and graduate students to discuss works‑in‑progress around a shared theme across disciplines. Participants commit to attending all sessions and engaging in sustained, rigorous conversation throughout the year.

The AY26 seminar, “Global Blackness: New Approaches to Black Studies in the 21st Century,” led by Lorgia García Peña, explores Blackness as a political concept that transcends borders and national identities. Together, participants will examine how global Black experiences shape—and are shaped by—gender, sexuality, citizenship, and other forms of belonging and unbelonging across space. This seminar is exclusively open to Princeton University faculty, students, and staff.
