Students in Princeton University VIS 249 / STC 249 Beyond Transparency: Glass as Material and Muse, co-taught by Lewis Center for the Arts Martha Friedman (VIS) and Vivian Feng (CST), traveled to the Corning Museum of Glass for an immersive, hands-on exploration of the material in action. Through demonstrations of historical glassblowing techniques, a behind-the-scenes conservation lab tour , and studio time where students created fusion glass art and crafted paperweights, the trip perfectly connected glass as a material learned in the classroom to real objects through the lenses of history, art, and innovation. Over fall break, students in Princeton University first-year seminar FRS 114: The Glass Class, embarked on an unforgettable study trip to Venice, Italy, led by Vivian Feng from the CST and Gisella Gisolo from the Office of International Programs. The group immersed themselves in the rich world of Venetian glass art, culture, and history through guest lectures and guided visits to renowned museums and landmarks, glass mosaic tile factory, and a historic glass furnace in Murano. A highlight of the trip was the opportunity to learn and work at a Murano glass school, where students received hands-on training in techniques such as glass fusion, millefiori work, and bead-making.

Students from Princeton University first-year seminar, FRS 177: "The Socratic Scientist" spent fall break in Athens, Greece, exploring how science, society, and ethics have been intertwined since ancient times. 🏛️
From the Ancient Agora to the University of Athens, they reflected on how inquiry and ethics shape scientific progress. A visit to the Alexander Fleming Biomedical Sciences Research Center with alumnus Dr. George Skretas *06 offered insight into global bioscience innovation, and the trip concluded with a symphony at the Herodeon Theater—thanks to hosts Alexia Inglessis ’11 and Ismini Inglessis ’13.

The CST hosted "STEM & Beyond: Charting an Interdisciplinary Journey", a panel showcasing the opportunities when STEM intersects with the humanities, arts, and other fields. The panel, from a wide range of fields, shared formative experiences, discussed the application of disciplinary methods in new contexts, and reflected on the challenges of navigating interdisciplinary careers. Students gained practical insights and advice for charting their own interdisciplinary paths.
