Thanks to the expertise of the Special Collections Digital Initiatives Unit, we’re able to digitize and transfer much of the audiovisual material (both analog and digital) held in Special Collections and the College Archives. Today, we’re transferring DATs (Digital Audio Tapes) from former RIC presidential inaugurations into modern digital formats.

Converting obsolete media helps prevent the loss of historically significant recordings caused by physical deterioration, material degradation, and the growing scarcity of playback equipment. By migrating these recordings, we help ensure continued access for future generations.

Importantly, digitization and transferring of obsolete digital media is not preservation. We retain the original media whenever possible, while also maintaining digital files through ongoing preservation efforts to protect against data corruption and technological obsolescence.

New exhibit in the library! Flipping Pages by Special Collections intern Rey Plante
How have textbooks changed over time? This exhibit compares 19th- and early 20th-century textbooks with their modern counterparts, exploring how knowledge has evolved and highlighting changes in the look, style, and experience of schooling across generations. The books used in the exhibit were drawn from the Special Collections Textbook Collection and the main Library collection.
Visit the exhibit on the 3rd floor of Adams Library through September.

Spain and Argentina will face off in the World Cup final this Sunday. RIC and Mortis have had to get creative when looking for equipment around the library to emulate their favorite players.

Last week, Digital Archivist and Special Collections Librarian Professor Denison presented at the “Preserving Portuguese Immigrant History Symposium,” organized by the Portuguese American Digital Archive team at UMass Lowell. Professor Denison discussed the Rhode Island Portuguese American Archives here at RIC and shared information about the Cape Verdean-related collections, as well as the initiatives for the Special Collections new Portuguese American collections and exhibits.
