The Department of Classics at Brown University The Department of Classics at Brown University offers instruction in Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, and Mod

Like the discipline itself, which lies at the foundation of the humanities, Brown University’s Department of Classics has a long and distinguished history, stretching from the founding of the University to Brown’s latest initiatives for academic enrichment. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are among the top in the country, and Classics faculty teach courses at all levels in the languages, literatures, and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, ranging from the beginning through the medieval and Byzantine periods, as well as in Sanskrit and Modern Greek.

The Program in Modern Greek Studies cordially invites you to join us for Memory Rehearsal: Author Eleni Sikelianos in conversation with Grace Talusan and Elizabeth Rush. This event will take place Tuesday, September 29, at 5:30 PM at Pembroke Hall, Room 305.

Celebrated American poet Eleni Sikelianos grew up knowing little of her illustrious ancestors, and it was not until the age of 20, on her first trip to Greece, that she encountered the breadth of their legacy. In Memory Rehearsal, Sikelianos unearths the story of her pioneering ancestor trying to make a place for herself, in a text that shifts between prose, poetry, imaginary performance texts, fiction, and nonfiction, with archival and family photographs.

This is the third book in a trilogy of hybrid memoirs in which Sikelianos reckons with a family shaped by mental illness, homelessness, and addiction. Grappling with knots of personal and broader histories, she performs a powerful act of recovery, re-situating herself by claiming her lineage.

Copies of Memory Rehearsal will be on sale during the reception immediately following the talk. You can find more information on the Modern Greek Studies website and Events@Brown page. We hope to see you there!

Seats still available for this summer course offering in Classics: This course is an introduction to Ancient Greek mythological traditions, as well as to the concept of ‘myth’ and its relevance and resonance today. Topics include the Olympian gods; ‘culture heroes’ (e.g. Heracles), Homer and the Trojan Cycle of myths; mythical traditions about the families of Oedipus and Agamemnon; etc. We will be reading ancient hymns, epics, and tragic dramas and other primary source material. Throughout the course, we will be considering questions of identity, migration, belonging, belief, and adaption. We will investigate myth’s relationship with literature, visual culture, and religion. We will explore modern adaptations of and engagements with ancient mythology. We will try to come to grips with conceptions of divinity and the imagined relationship—and symbiosis—between gods and mortals.
