National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was founded in 1971 at Purdue University as a support network for black engineers. NSBE is one of the largest student led organizations in the United States with membership exceeding 30,000 collegiate and alumni members, and about 3,500 pre-college students in over 300 chapters. NSBE’s mission is to increase
the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact our communities. Brown University Society of Black Engineers (BUSBE)
The Brown University chapter of NSBE was officially chartered on July 7th, 2002, but it has existed within the Brown Engineering community years before this date. Within the last four years, Brown’s chapter of NSBE has been inactive due to low number of minority students pursuing an engineering degree. With the strong desire to create and sustain a community of black engineers, student leaders from the class of 2016 and 2017 reactivated Brown’s chapter by recruiting 19 active members. We focus on building a strong community within our membership by providing a support system as our members navigate the road to an engineering degree.
