Creative Media Maker? Equipment Checkout through Brown Arts Institute

Are you a creative/artist/media producer? One of several ways the Brown Arts Institute supports the creative production of the Brown community is by maintaining a small fleet of digital media equipment, like cameras, audio recorders, tripods, and lights that can be checked out and are managed by CATS (Creative Arts and Technology Spaces).

Currently, all CATS members (including students, staff, and instructors) are eligible to use our checkout service after completing the online EQ Center training.

Gavin Lu, Ph.D. Candidate in Biomedical Engineering presents on Attacking Titan Cells in Therapy-Resistant Cancer at Research Matters 2026.

Gavin Lu's research focuses on therapy-resistant giant cancer cells, studying their physical structure and metabolic activities to identify novel treatment options and improve the treatment landscape of ovarian cancer.

Lu grew up in China, and received a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. Aside from research, Lu also has a great passion for science communication, mentorship and community outreach.

Open Graduate Education allows Brown PhD students to pursue a master’s degree in a secondary field that differs from that of their PhD. Selected doctoral students write unique dissertations, pursue creative research, and forge career pathways that require knowledge in more than one field. This program builds on the traditions of free inquiry and collaborative research at Brown.

To learn more about the program and the upcoming application deadline in February 2027, please join us for a hybrid information session.

You must register to join. In-person registrants should meet in 225 Dyer on the 4th Floor in Room 465. Online registrants will be provided with a Zoom link via email.

December 7, 9, and 11 | 11:30am - 1:30pm | 225 Dyer St, Rm 465

Organized by the Swearer Center, the series will provide participants with the space to engage -- across disciplines, programs, and backgrounds -- in conversations about community engagement in their scholarship, learning, and action. Sessions will include group discussions, guest conversations with community-engaged scholars and practitioners, and dedicated time for reflection and questions.

Join the Sheridan Course Design Seminar - Spring 2027

During this semester-long seminar, participants are guided through an integrated course design process to develop a syllabus, signature assignments, and teaching strategies for a semester-long course.

As participants move through the five modules of the seminar, they engage with colleagues from a variety of disciplines workshopping their course plans with one another.

Registration is open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have successfully completed the Sheridan Teaching Seminar (Certificate I).

Gender at the Table: Graduate Students in Conversation

Join the Sarah Doyle Center for Gender at the Table, a biweekly lunchtime workspace for graduate students interested in exploring how gender shows up in their research, scholarship, creative work, and across disciplines.

Whether gender is central to your research or something you’re just beginning to think about weaving into your work, this is a space to connect with fellow graduate students (Ph.D, M.A., and Med), exchange ideas, and explore new perspectives through various disciplines. Each gathering will feature a guiding question or topic to get the workspace started, with plenty of time for informal discussion, research sharing, and getting to know one another. No presentations or prior research required. Food will be provided.

Devanney Haruta, Ph.D. Candidate in Musicology and Ethnomusicology presents at Research Matters on: The Meaning of Musical Instruments at Research Matters 2026.

Devanney Haruta is a music researcher working at the intersection of musicology and ethnomusicology. Her research investigates the relationships between humans, musical instruments and the natural environment.

She is passionate about making music scholarship accessible to public audiences, and has written podcasts, curated museum displays and worked with nonprofit music organizations including Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana. Her outdoor installation “Piano (de)composition,” located on Brown’s campus, has been featured by the Providence Journal and the NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.
