Day 2 of Graduate International Orientation is in the books!

From morning coffee and swag pickups to insightful peer panels, immigration essentials, and an evening reception, it was an incredible day welcoming our newest global graduate students to campus.

A huge thank you to all of our speakers, peer mentors, CAPS representatives, and community partners for sharing their time and wisdom. Most of all, thank you to our incoming graduate students for bringing your energy, stories, and enthusiasm to Brown!

Summer ELP Gallery Walk

Over the last two weeks, international graduate students were hard at work in the early summer program, hosted by the Sheridan Center.

-Snapshots of the linguistic environments from their hometowns and previous localities 📸
-Cross-cultural reflections on language, identity, and place 🗣️

Congratulations to the students on their excellent presentations!

Navigating Professional Expectations Workshop
September 22, 29 & October 6 (5 - 7 pm) | In-person

This workshop introduces students to the hidden curriculum behind an Ivy League education. In graduate school, students must navigate expectations related to in-person and written correspondence, interpersonal interactions, professional boundaries, and networking.

Many of these aspects of graduate education are unstated, unwritten, and difficult to notice without calling attention to them. This workshop provides an opportunity to reflect on these elements of graduate education and discuss how to successfully navigate them for your own desired outcomes.

Deadline to Apply: September 17, 2026

Brianna Hoegler, Ph.D. Candidate, Earth, Environmental & Planetary Science presents at Research Matters 2026 on "How Phytoplankton Shape the Ocean Carbon Cycle"

Brianna Hoegler is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate who is excited to learn about Earth’s past oceans — namely, how the surface ocean and marine ecosystems responded to past climate conditions.

Hoegler began her scientific career from an early age, attending the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science for high school before completing her undergraduate studies in geosciences at the University of Arizona.

There, she conducted research using tropical lake sediments to reconstruct past El Niño events. In her spare time, Hoegler enjoys hiking, reading and cooking, and she is currently serving as the conference co-chair for the LGBTQ+ STEM nonprofit oSTEM.

Inspired to participate next year? Nominations and applications for the 2027 Research Matters speakers are now open! Learn more: https://graduateschool.brown.edu/phd-experience/research-communication/research-matters/research-matters-2026
