Participants in ICERM's fall semester program took a break from "Computations on K3 Surfaces and Related Varieties" to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day with cake. The holiday, held the second Tuesday in October, is in honor of women in STEM.

ICERM co-PI Javier Gómez Serrano, a Brown University mathematics professor, was interviewed by National Public Radio about OpenAI's announcement that its AI had solved one of the world's toughest math problems earlier this month.

"The paper is not written for humans," Gómez Serrano said. He added that he believes the proof could help advance the field after "some serious re-writing," but "as of today, the paper doesn't teach us much."

The conference honors the legacy of two scientists and educators, David Blackwell and Richard Tapia: recipients of the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest honor for scientists and engineers.

The Blackwell-Tapia conference highlights mathematical scientists who have contributed significantly to research in their fields of expertise; outstanding mentors with a demonstrated record of developing mathematical sciences talent; and emerging leaders in the mathematical sciences community.

The Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) and ICERM announce that the 2026 Blackwell-Tapia Prize will be awarded to Dr. Johnny Guzmán, associate chair and professor of applied mathematics​​ at Brown University.

The prize will be awarded at the 13th Blackwell-Tapia Conference and Award Ceremony in December 2026 at Rice University in Houston.

Since 2002, the biennial Blackwell-Tapia Prize has recognized an active mathematical scientist who has contributed and continues to contribute significantly to research in their fields of expertise, and who has served as an outstanding mentor with a demonstrated record of developing mathematical talent wherever it may be found, including underserved communities.

In Philadelphia in July, Brown University mathematicians Georgios Daskalopoulos and Benoît Pausader presented at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), an honor of the highest order.

“As for ICM, I’d say that it is a very humbling experience for me to be able to participate,” said Pausader, Brown's math chair.

Since 2020, Pausader has been co-Principal Investigator of ICERM’s core National Science Foundation award. He also organized the fall 2021 ICERM program at which Yu Deng, a 2026 Fields Medalist, participated.

Congratulations to Yu Deng (University of Chicago), who was awarded one of four 2026 Fields Medals at the opening ceremony at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia on July 23.

In fall 2021, Deng participated in a semester-long session at ICERM, "Hamiltonian Methods in Dispersive and Wave Evolution Equations.” He co-wrote four papers stemming from the research conducted there.
