Can you pursue a liberal arts education while also getting deeply involved in research? At Brown, you don’t have to choose.

Meet Sriya Sai Pushpa Datla, Brown University ’28 and Warren Alpert Medical School ’32, a third-year undergraduate student in the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) studying Health and Human Biology along with an Entrepreneurship Certificate.

A BS/MD advisor herself, Sriya often hears prospective students wonder whether attending a liberal arts institution means giving up opportunities for meaningful research. Her own experience at Brown has shown her that liberal arts and world-class research can coexist.

Sriya has explored her interests across disciplines starting as early as her freshman year, while building a research experience spanning institutions, working alongside faculty and physicians on studies related to patient care, health equity, and surgical medicine. Through Brown’s undergraduate research opportunities and funding programs, she has turned her interests into hands-on work, leading to research posters and abstracts, national conference presentations, and research publications.

For Sriya, one of the most meaningful parts of the Brown experience is having the freedom to explore broadly while finding the mentorship and opportunities to pursue questions she’s interesed in deeply.

“When I think about my transition from the Silver Lake area of Providence to Brown University, I often reflect on how the fantasy of the college on the hill became dispelled. Throughout my time here, I have come to learn that Brown reflects the bright and vibrant community Providence calls home. Our professors, students, and even administrators work tirelessly to ensure that our campus feels and is a strong community based on sharing moments of joy and our diverse cultures.

One of my favorite perks of being a Providence Public School District (PPSD) graduate and now being on College Hill is the ability to rediscover the city I love so dearly. Having friends who have never been to Providence or even the Northeast has allowed me to experience snowball fights in the dead of winter, WaterFire during the summer, and even PVDfest all for the first time again.

Brown University is located in Providence, and because of that, we are uniquely poised to call this university our home. Despite what others might tell you, applying and coming to Brown is not something to be afraid of, but rather a reclaiming of a resource that is ours to use!”

“I chose Brown because the intersection of academic excellence and freedom is profoundly unique. After coming from a high school with a structured curriculum, I was drawn to the opportunity to have more ownership over my education. The idea of combining my wide range of interests, from arts to languages to math, is very intriguing.

I am also drawn to the sense of support and community at Brown. I wanted a university that cared about more than academic achievement and recognized the importance of a student’s entire journey. From the welcoming faces on my first visit to the beauty of College Hill, Brown instantly felt like a place where I could thrive as a student and a person.

What I love most about Brown is the happiness I feel when I’m here. I remember hearing the tour guides on my first tour say that choosing Brown was one of the best decisions they had ever made. From my time observing College Hill so far, I love the little moments that make Brown feel like a community: people playing on the Main Green, students walking to class together, groups reading under the sun, and constantly being surrounded by people who make you feel like you belong.

I believe the academic freedom at Brown will allow me to become the most authentic and passionate scholar I can be. It will let me take full advantage of my education and graduate with a wide range of skills. I want to explore different subjects and perspectives that will help me better understand people and the world around me. 30 high school seniors from 24 states across rural America traveled to Providence for the 2026 STARS@Brown Senior Fly-in. “Deciding to study and live across the country for the next eight years was a huge commitment, but one that I made because I believed that at Brown, I would be surrounded by driven, uplifting students and would have the resources to merge my interests in medicine and the humanities.

As a physician, I want to treat people holistically. Consequently, my interests lie in the intersection of neuroscience and cultural competence. Pursuing this, I have taken a wide range of courses in seven different departments. It might have easily felt like I was falling behind; however, with Brown’s flexibility, I have no pressure or expectations other than my personal growth. In fact, I have the chance to get ahead by exploring myself while focusing on a specific concentration goal. The Open Curriculum provides the perfect scaffolding for students to explore the unknown without getting lost. Being at Brown means finding innovation and community in any field one could imagine and intersections of fields that will inevitably surprise!

Additionally, the PLME has offered Pre-clerkship Electives that allow me to take niche classes at the medical school, and Whole Patient Programs that are like an insightful medical memoir come to life. I also have a cohort of friends, peers, and mentors who have passions just as diverse as my own and want to share them with each other. The PLME offers a noteworthy opportunity to explore overlapping fields of study, which I hope to capitalize on to grow as a well-rounded future physician.

My favorite thing about Brown is the happiness that campus radiates – rain or sun, everyone seems to be moving forward together. Each individual is unique in their interest and passionate about what they do, but rather than divide, these differences bring us together as we collaborate and care about each other’s successes. It’s the dining hall workers whose smiles never falter; it’s the teachers whose office hours are more than just a Q&A session; it’s the peers who share study materials before tests; it’s the friends who frolic on the main green. Simply put, it’s the people.”

“I chose Brown for its commitment to renewable energy, its proximity to the nation’s first offshore wind farm off Block Island, and research opportunities that undergraduates can access. Climate change is the ultimate threat to the world we know and love, and I want to be at the forefront of innovation. After traveling to 47 states, New England was one of the few regions I did not know well, and I wanted to experience the culture and the people here for myself.

The opportunities came fast. I earned a Spring UTRA my freshman year doing oceanography research with Professor Baylor Fox-Kemper, consolidating 20 years of data for the Ocean State Oceanographic Model, which helps forecast currents, temperature, and salinity in Narragansett Bay. The next summer I studied GPS and geodesy at Michigan State, and this past summer I did engineering work for a mining company that sharpened my skills and opened doors toward entrepreneurship.

As a mechanical engineering concentrator with 21-degree requirements, I use the Open Curriculum less traditionally, but its flexibility has let me move through my degree in my own order, and that freedom has helped me both academically and personally.

Being a veteran here has been an adjustment I did not expect. I am in my thirties, married, and a decade older than most of my classmates, and after ten years around people in uniform, my sense of humor was calibrated for a very different audience. But my classmates have been curious about my path rather than confused by it, and Brown has given me room to be a married veteran and a junior at the same time.

Outside class, my favorite thing is time with my wife and our dog. We love catching metal shows around Providence, the food scene punches far above its weight, and on fall Saturdays you can find me at Snookers watching college football.

My goal is to build my own business, and I am already developing a prototype with two partners. More than anything, Brown has given me confidence. Whatever job I take and wherever I live, I know the skills I built here will let me flourish.”
