Stay curious and learn from others were some of the key takeaways students in EDC 462 recently received from a guest panel of teachers who visited the senior seminar for elementary education majors.

Kate O'Neill, Carla Jewell, and Carly Cruff from Pell Elementary School in Newport spoke to the class and answered questions. The conversation encouraged students to explore their own identities as teachers, recognizing that their beliefs and approaches will evolve with experience. The panelists emphasized the importance of staying curious, learning from others, and developing a teaching style that reflects their own values rather than simply following someone else's approach.

"Their energy and enthusiasm kept us laughing and engaged!" says Professor Chrissy Johansen, who expressed her gratitude to the three for taking the time to encourage and inspire URI students studying to become elementary educators.

It takes math to build bridges. And math teachers to build futures,

College of Education faculty, students, and alumni were well-represented last week at the annual conference of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England (ATMNE) where the theme was "Bridging Ideas, Building Futures: Equity and Excellence in Mathematics Education." Student volunteers helped keep the conference running smoothly while faculty and an alum presented their research.

Professors Amy Correia, Nicole Hersey-Bertram, and Pete Adamy presented "Essential Practices for Integrated Language and Content Instruction." Professors Adamy and Virginia Killian Lund presented "AI as a Tool for Teacher Research: Investigating Best Practices for Multilingual Learners and Math."

Adjunct faculty member Lisa Garcia presented "Building Student Self-Efficacy: Helping Students to Identify as Learners." And TESOL alum Audrey King presented "Encouraging Discourse in Math Classrooms Serving Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students." Dean Libutti, URI's associate VP for enrollment management and student success, also made an appearance as a panelist.

This year's event was hosted by the RI Mathematics Teachers Association; Hersey-Bertram served as co-chair of the program committee.

Professor Laura Hamman-Ortiz was recently featured by the URI Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. Hamman-Ortiz, associate professor of TESOL and bilingual education, directs the URI Translanguaging Lab and mostly teaches in the TESOL/Bilingual Education master's program.

In the interview, Hamman-Ortiz shares that one of proudest moments of teaching in the past year was when a class assignment resulted in a shared commitment between the student and her principal to "make their school a more welcoming and inclusive multilingual space. This kind of advocacy – taking learning beyond the university classroom – is what makes my teaching feel the most meaningful."

Professor Nicole King recently offered a professional learning session at the French American School of Rhode Island (FASRI). The event focused on developing translanguaging stances through reflection on individuals' language user profiles.

Approximately 20 teachers joined this voluntary afterschool session to reflect on multilingualism, identity, and translanguaging. They also began to construct their language user profiles; their initial constructions of how they use language—with different people, in different contexts, and for different purposes—took many forms: brains, trains, trees, spirals, and more.

King, who is an assistant professor of TESOL and bilingual education, will head back to FASRI in March to lead a similar activity with the families from the school to reflect on how their family multilingual repertoires (or familylect) has developed, been embodied, and how it could be visualized.
