Founded, supported, and guided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the J. Reuben Clark Law School (BYU Law) is an integral part of Brigham Young University and embraces the university’s global mission and aims. BYU Law recognizes the inherent dignity and equality of each individual and welcomes people from the full range of human experience. We are committed to the teachings of Jesus Christ and honor His many roles, including healer, mediator, counselor, peacemaker, advocate, lawgiver, and judge. In striving to emulate His example, we seek to be and develop people of integrity who combine faith and intellect in lifelong service to God and neighbor. As a community, we aim to advance justice, mercy, liberty, opportunity, peace, and the rule of law. To these ends, BYU Law prioritizes inspiring teaching, rigorous study, and influential scholarship in an environment that values diversity, fosters unity, motivates excellence, nurtures leadership, promotes innovation, engenders empathy, and cultivates compassion.

With 1L recruiting beginning earlier than ever, BYU Law Academies are moving earlier too.

This week, students are heading out during fall placement break for the first time. They’ll gain real-world legal experience at leading law firms across the country, giving them firsthand exposure to practice areas, firm cultures, and career paths—as well as the opportunity to build relationships with attorneys in the field.

“You can best endure law school by focusing on things that are enduring.”

Professor Kevin J Worthen of BYU Law gave an inspiring devotional this week as he reflected on why some things last while others don’t.

While grades, money, and pride are ephemeral, identity, charity, and relationships are enduring. Most enduring of all is the truth that God loves you.

Professor Worthen invited students to focus on these things that endure, allowing law school to become an experience that has a lasting, positive impact on their lives.

Fifty years after the first class graduated from BYU Law, it was wonderful to welcome our charter class back to campus for their 50-year reunion!

The class of 1976 came together for a day of memories, laughter, and reconnecting, with alumni traveling from as far away as Hawaii to celebrate this milestone together. We’re grateful for the alumni who continue to stay connected, share their experiences, and support the next generation of legal professionals.

This Constitution Day, we are thrilled to announce a new corpus containing nearly 7 million words of historical evidence from the period surrounding the ratification of the Constitution of the United States.

Assistant Dean David Armond at BYU Law worked with student researchers to create the corpus, which contains more than 14,000 primary-source texts. The collection expands the Corpus of Founding Era American English (COFEA) by roughly 20%, giving researchers a broader body of historical language to examine as they consider what the Constitution’s words meant to the people who wrote and ratified it.

“The Constitution is worth articulating and defending… not just today, but every day.”

We were honored to welcome Leslie Kendrick, dean of the University of Virginia School of Law, to BYU Law for an early Constitution Day forum.

Dean Kendrick explored the history of Constitution Day and the ways Americans have marked the anniversary of the Constitution’s signing for more than a century. She reflected on how Constitution Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the Constitution and the values we share—even when we disagree on so many other things.

Thank you, Dean Kendrick, for joining us at BYU Law and reminding us why the Constitution is worth articulating, defending, and celebrating every day.

Our first BYU Law Devotional of fall semester featured Nick Hafen, Head of Legal Tech Education at BYU Law. He discussed how law and technology are both powerful tools, with their impact ultimately shaped by how people wield them. As technology and the legal profession become more intertwined than ever, understanding these tools, and using them responsibly, will be increasingly important for today’s lawyers.
