Big congratulations to our very own Professor Tom Smith! 🐾🐻 His research on human, bear, and dog interactions was recently featured in The New York Times. The big takeaway? Keeping your dog on a leash in the woods isn’t just about trail etiquette—it’s crucial for protecting both your pup and wildlife. So proud to learn from the best! Students on a study abroad trip to Japan recently explored the stunning rice paddies of Sado Island! 🌾🕊️
While there, they learned how local farmers united to save the endangered crested ibis from extinction. By ditching pesticides and returning to traditional, eco-friendly farming in their flooded paddies, the community brought back the birds’ vital food source—and revived the entire population. An inspiring lesson in how agriculture and conservation can work together! ✨

Students recently stepped out of their comfort zones and onto the quiet grounds of Bulguksa Temple in South Korea. During their overnight stay, they wore traditional gray vest robes, shared a silent meditative dinner, and engaged in Buddhist traditions centered around gratitude and reflection amidst ancient pagodas. Experiencing another faith’s perspective gave them a deeper, richer understanding of their own. ⛩️✨

“I love going to church here. It is my favorite day of the whole week. The joy that is felt walking into a congregation of smiling joyfilled members is something that makes my heart leap.
I loved seeing the church so packed lots with our group had to stand in the back. I loved seeing how the branch presidency ran the branch with love and honor.
I loved seeing the youth, many who just come with friends, all sit at the front, listening and playing with their hands
I loved seeing one of the girls sitting in the front singing with her heart about Jesus Christ and the love He has for her.” 🤍
For Rachel Edwards, Sundays on her study abroad in South Africa were filled with pure joy, warm smiles, and powerful examples of faith and love across the globe. 🕊️✨

Getting down and dirty in the rice paddies! 🌾 Our students traded the classroom for the terraced hills of Niigata prefecture, Japan’s iconic rice belt. They got hands-on experience with traditional rice planting methods, learning firsthand the labor-intensive techniques that have shaped this landscape for centuries.
