💭How do adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) shape the therapy process for couples❔

In a newly published study, MFT PhD student + BYU professors examined how histories of childhood adversity relate to emotion regulation change during couple therapy.

Findings suggest that emotional maltreatment and mental illness in the childhood household are associated with greater emotion regulation difficulties at the start of treatment, highlighting the lasting impact of early experiences on adult relationships.

This work adds to a growing body of research helping clinicians better understand how trauma histories influence therapeutic change and relationship functioning.

Congratulations to authors Betsy Hughes Barrow, Angela Bradford, Justin Dyer, Alyssa Banford Witting, and Lee Johnson on this important contribution to the field!

Students pursuing the SFL Family Services Track may be eligible to pursue multiple employment pathways in Utah, including the NEW Behavioral Health Coach/Technician designation and the established Social Service Worker credential.

These opportunities allow graduates to work in helping professions while gaining valuable experience serving individuals, families, and communities.

Consider enrolling in courses such as SFL 465 during fall semesters, and the *newly redesigned* SFL 401, an ✨applied behavioral health course✨ being offered starting in in Winter 2027.

Students interested in social service work (SSW) may also benefit from taking SW 331 and SW 360 as they explore career options available with an undergraduate degree in SFL.

Whether you’re considering graduate school, exploring a future in family therapy, or looking for meaningful employment opportunities after graduation, these courses can help you build practical skills, strengthen your résumé, and learn more about growing workforce needs in Utah.

Talk with your academic advisor to learn how these opportunities may fit your educational and career goals. Liberal Arts Advisement
