In honor of the WSU School of Music’s 125th Anniversary, Dr. Julie Anne Wieck, soprano, and Elena Panchenko, piano, will be presenting a recital entitled Songs of the Early 20th Century. At that time American composers were just starting to develop their own unique styles of art song, previously relying heavily on European music. The program will begin with several popular Italian art songs, made famous by Enrico Caruso when he emigrated to the United States in 1901. Other selections composed in 1901, including Arnold Schoenberg’s Cabaret Songs and Roger Quilter’s Three Songs, will be performed, along with some of Reynaldo Hahn’s song cycle, Chanson grises. Come and hear some of the lovely art song that would later influence the development of the genre in the United States. This Faculty Artist Series recital will occur on Friday, October 9, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. in Bryan Hall Theatre.

Princess Ida or Castle Adamant is a comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, satirizing women’s education and Darwinism, popular topics at the time in Victorian England, resulting in a battle of the sexes. The princess, engaged at a very early age, decides to reject the patriarchal world and create her own women’s university. Her betrothed and his two friends infiltrate the university to change her mind. Updated from the original medieval setting, the WSU production occurs in the 1950’s as both sides look for cooperation and a relationship based on equality rather than dominance. The WSU Opera/Musical Theatre program is directed by Dr. Julie Anne Wieck with assistance from Elena Panchenko, collaborative pianist. The WSU Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Dr. Danh Pham. The productions will be in Bryan Hall Theatre on Friday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door for $10 Students/Senior Citizens and $15 General Admission.
