Last week, Dr. Colin Grier’s Anth 334 course (Time & Culture in the Northwest) spent the day in his Northwest Coast Archaeology Lab on the Vancouver campus. The goal was to provide students some hands on experience with ancient Northwest Coast technologies, faunal analysis, and archaeological mapping & remote sensing methods.

The WSU Department of Anthropology is excited to promote the upcoming virtual book launch for "The Cambridge Handbook for the Anthropology of Death", co-edited by Sarah L. Richardson, Sarah E. Wagner, and Ruth E. Toulson.

About the Event
Officially published on July 30, 2026, this new volume is being celebrated with a casual, "raise-a-glass" virtual gathering. The launch will feature brief remarks from volume contributors Thomas W. Laqueur, Abou Farman, and Andreia Vicente da Silva.

During the summer, Dr. Rachel Horowitz conducted NSF funded fieldwork in Belize. In collaboration with Belizean colleagues and colleagues at the University of Texas at San Antonio, she worked to investigate stone tool production among the Classic period Maya. During the summer she presented at the Belize Archaeology Symposium, hosted a stone tool making workshop, and participated in a public archaeology day.

The Department of Anthropology welcomes Katharina Rynkiewich.

She is a cultural and medical anthropologist coming to WSU from Boca Raton, Florida.

Her areas of research include American healthcare settings and the risk management of infectious diseases, with an emphasis on the global problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Her data collection sites include the Midwest, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

This fall, she is teaching ANTH 203: Global Cultural Diversity, and she is expected to teach ANTH 405: Medical Anthropology in the spring of 2027.

Her first book, “Acts of Resistance: Antibiotic Use and Prescribing Culture in the United States,” was just published and represents 10 years of data collection in the Midwest.
