The next time you’re at a Washington State Football game, watch for featured twirler, Charli Dixon! She’s a senior WSU Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture Electrical Engineering student.

Why did you choose the Voiland College?

"When applying for schools, I looked for good engineering programs at schools that had baton twirlers. Voiland seemed like the best choice for the route of study I wanted to pursue, which was power engineering. I was lucky that WSU also happened to have an opening for the Feature Twirler position at the time. A big plus for Voiland is the proximity to Schweitzer Engineering, which allows for so many advantages for students."

Why Electrical Engineering?

My dad is an electrician, so growing up I had toys that were centered around electrical concepts/engineering. Snap Circuits were a lot of fun. Electrical engineering has continued to interest me throughout my time studying it.

What do you want to do with your degree?

I want to work in public utilities. Especially with the growth of this field, I think that working in utilities would be fulfilling.

How do you balance classes & twirling?

It can be difficult. I have to outline a clear schedule for studying and getting work done so it doesn’t interfere with twirling. During the fall semester, I seldom get free time, but I really enjoy school and band, so it never really is too much.

What reactions have you had when people find out the feature twirler is also an electrical engineering major?

I usually get a surprised/shocked reaction at first, then a comment about how difficult my major is and how smart I must be. I know a handful of twirlers around the nation who study engineering, but I guess it’s not what most people expect when they see a baton twirler.

Charli, great work representing WSU Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture & WSU Pullman!

What can a water sample teach you?

At Washington State University, environmental engineering students get hands-on experience testing water quality and measuring alkalinity and hardness: key indicators that help us understand the health of our water and how it interacts with the infrastructure we rely on every day.

From real samples to real data, students are learning how to protect natural resources and design smarter, more resilient systems.
