Stone Laboratory

Stone Laboratory Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States.

Stone Laboratory has been an invaluable asset in freshwater biology research, science education and outreach. The lab serves as a base for more than 65 researchers from 12 agencies and academic institutions, all working year-round to solve the most pressing problems facing the Great Lakes. In addition to its role as a research facility, Stone Lab offers 30 college-credit science courses each summe

r for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators. The hands-on sessions get students out into the field or out on the lake to study courses like biology, geology, and natural resources.

OMTA’s Joe Sugalski spent the day on Gibraltar Island and South Bass Island this week for a “field trip” hosted by Ohio Sea Grant and the Fresh Water Institute at Stone Laboratory. The day brought together water education, environmental and community leaders from across Northeast Ohio, including Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, Emily Bacha of the Fresh Water Institute, and other regional partners.

The visit included an Ohio Sea Grant Science Cruise, a tour of Gibraltar Island and Stone Lab, and a stop at the new ODNR Aquatic Visitor Center. It was a great opportunity to learn more about Lake Erie research, water quality, aquatic resources, and the organizations working to protect one of Ohio’s most important natural and economic assets.

For OMTA, opportunities like this help strengthen connections between Ohio’s marine industry, environmental organizations, educators, and other partners who all share an interest in a healthy and thriving Lake Erie.
