From the Arctic Circle to Princeton labs, senior physics student Athena Smith is proving that curiosity can take you anywhere. ❄️🔬
Athena’s passion for science began in childhood and led her to groundbreaking research opportunities through Radford University’s Alaska Geophysics Program, where she conducted field research on Arctic sea ice in Utqiagvik, Alaska; enduring extreme temperatures, powerful winds, and even the possibility of polar bears nearby.
Her research journey didn’t stop there. Athena also spent summer 2025 conducting research at Princeton University before securing a position with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) following graduation this May.
“My whole career at Radford has been research-focused,” Athena shared. “I give all the thanks to Radford. I honestly would not want to be anywhere else.”
We are incredibly proud of Athena and all she has accomplished through undergraduate research! 🌎✨
