Outstanding Faculty Research Award: Pankaj Patel, PhD, and Judith Giesberg, PhD

Please join us in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Library, on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 1-3 p.m., as Judith Giesberg, PhD, and Pankaj Patel, PhD present on the research that led them to win the coveted Outstanding Faculty Research Award. Dr. Patel will be presenting a talk titled, “Innovation Is a Bet: What Entrepreneurs, Family Firms, and Supply Chains Teach Us About Risk.” Dr. Giesberg will be presenting a talk titled, “Listening to a Very Loud Archive: The Last Seen Project’s 5000 Stories of Slavery and Survival.”

This event, co-sponsored by Falvey Library and the Office of the Provost, is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Approved for ACS Cultural Event Credit.

Join us on Tuesday, September 22 from 4:30-6 pm in Falvey Library’s Speakers’ Corner for as Zophia Edwards, PhD, Assistant Professor of Sociology, Johns Hopkins University, presents her new book entitled, Fueling Development: How Black Radical Trade Unionism Transformed Trinidad & Tobago (Duke University Press, 2025). Prof. Edwards' research examines the impacts of colonialism and multiracial labor movements on state formation and human development in the Global South, with a particular focus on resource-rich countries. Her book, Fueling Development, is the recipient of the American Sociological Association's Immanuel Wallerstein Memorial award for the best book on the Political Economy of the World System.

This ACS-approved event is sponsored by Africana Studies and co-sponsored by Falvey Library the Departments of Global Interdisciplinary Studies, History, Political Science, and Sociology and Criminology. It is free and open to all! Light refreshments will be served.

Please join us on Monday, Sept. 14, from 12-1 p.m., in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Library, for a talk on "When Climate Disrupts Mobility: Data, AI, and the Unequal Geography of Access," presented by Chenfeng Xiong, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Villanova University.

Drawing on federally supported research spanning transportation, health, climate, and equity, this talk will explore how mobility data, AI-driven analytics, simulation, and digital decision-support tools can help us understand unequal impacts and design more resilient and equitable systems by integrating these ideas to Villanova through the Climate-Mobility World Model, a proposed living laboratory for exploring sustainable, climate-resilient, and equitable mobility designs across the University's evolving multi-campus system.

Please join us on Wednesday, September 9, from 2-3 p.m. for a talk by Samer Abboud, PhD, Professor, Department of Global Interdisciplinary Studies, as he discusses his recently published book, Betrayal of the Homeland: Disloyal Subjects in Wartime Syria. The event will take place in Falvey Library’s Speakers’ Corner.

In this book, Dr. Abboud argues that the Syrian regime sought to entrench its rule during wartime through bifurcating society into “loyal” and “disloyal” subjects—and punishing those it deemed treacherous. The regime framed the conflict as a war on terror, portraying its opponents as traitors to the homeland. In the post-2015 period, it established new laws, courts, and legal categories that targeted “betrayal,” which could include anything from military desertion to absenteeism to critical social media posts. Disloyal subjects were subjected to various forms of punishment and denied reentry into the country if they had been displaced. Bringing together the regime’s narratives and rhetoric with the machinery of bureaucratic practices, Abboud traces how the state sculpted the divide between loyalty and disloyalty. Betrayal of the Homeland offers a panoramic view of the politics of punishment during the final decade of the Assad regime, with broader implications for understanding how authoritarian states manage conflicts.

This event is part of the Scholarship@Villanova event series, which is dedicated to the recognition of the scholarly publications, ongoing research, and other intellectual contributions of faculty members from all six colleges of Villanova University. It is co-sponsored by Falvey Library. Department of Global Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Office of the Provost and is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served. Join Matt O’Hare, Digital Scholarship Multimedia Specialist, Tuesday, Sept. 8, 12-1p.m., for a virtual workshop titled “Intro to Computer Music: Build an Algorithmic Sequencer in Max.” ⁠

In this beginner-friendly workshop, we’ll explore one of the core tools of electronic music production—the sequencer—and reimagine it as a creative partner. Using a few simple algorithmic ideas, you’ll build your own interactive music-making program. This custom sequencer will be able to generate evolving rhythms and melodies that can control software synthesizers and MIDI hardware. Instead of traditional coding, we’ll work in Max, a visual programming environment designed for artists and musicians. ⁠

No prior experience with music production or programming is required. Before the session, you’re encouraged to download Max (available at cycling74.com/downloads) and explore the interface.⁠

Located on the second floor of Falvey Library in Room 218A, the Digital Scholarship Lab supports Villanova faculty, students, and staff who are working on developing digital projects or are interested in learning more about digital media, digital humanities, or data-intensive research and teaching. The Lab will be open by reservation only during the following days and times, except during Villanova holidays and closures:

Mondays: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tuesdays: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Wednesdays: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
