“There’s an audience out there for you, it’s just a matter of finding those people.”

Three MADTech student animations that began as senior capstones ended up on screen at ICON13's Motion Commotion in Baltimore.

For Lily Barber, Sophia Vaughn and Sophie Gabriel, it was an opportunity to put deeply personal work in front of an audience beyond NC State for the first time, as well as fight the inner voices that make many creatives hesitate to share.

What does it mean to be a graphic designer today?

In his new book, “Graphic Designers After Graphic Design,” NC State - Graphic & Experience Design + Industrial Design assistant professor and host of Scratching the Surface Jarrett Fuller explores the increasingly blurry boundaries of the discipline through interviews, case studies and profiles of designers working across publishing, research, performance, art and more.

Ultimately, the book is designed to serve as a lifeline to those despairing about the “death of graphic design.”

What does it take to turn an architectural idea into something people can actually use?

For NC State College of Design’s Design + Build students, the answer is 11 weeks, 15 students, a lot of steel and plenty of real-world problem solving.

This summer’s team designed and built The Crossover, a new pavilion at The Corner on Centennial Campus. Along the way, students navigated delayed materials, unexpected site conditions, fabrication, construction, collaboration with industry partners and the realities of working with a real client.

The finished project now gives students, employees and visitors a place to gather and take shelter, while giving its student creators something even more valuable: a built project they helped bring from concept to reality.

"A design proposed without interacting with the users and the community is bound to fail."

That's what Miraz Reza, a final-year Master of Architecture student, took away from 'Studio Kenya: Visioning Spatial Future of Maya Community.' The new interdisciplinary studio sent NC State College of Design students to Maya Island in Kilifi County, Kenya, over Spring Break.

During their visit, students traded their studio desks for an opportunity to create meaningful design through communication and adaptability in a cross-cultural setting led by Associate Professor Donghwan Moon,.

Working alongside Pwani University, students and local residents, the group spent 10 days building the beginning of a village-scale master plan addressing infrastructure, mobility and community needs.
