Two hundred and fifty years ago, fifty-six men pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to create a nation unlike any the world had ever known.

One of those men was North Carolina’s own Joseph Hewes.

A successful merchant and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Hewes devoted his wealth, his talents, and ultimately his health to the cause of liberty. Historians often credit him as one of the principal architects of the early American Navy, and many believed he sacrificed much of his personal fortune to support the Revolutionary cause.

Records show that Joseph Hewes was associated with Unanimity Lodge No. 7 in Edenton and was later buried with Masonic honors.

Today that spirit lives on through the North Carolina Masonic Foundation, which supports the charitable mission of North Carolina Masonry. Visit mfnc.org to learn more!

On December 12, 1787, a band of North Carolina Masons — brothers of the Revolutionary generation, many of them patriots and veterans of the recent struggle for independence — gathered to take a bold step: they organized a Grand Lodge for this Old North State.

Today, we mark the 238th anniversary of that decision — and with it, more than two centuries of Masonic labor, quiet service, and brotherly love.
