Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the first historically black college in the South. Shaw is a private, coeducational, liberal arts university affiliated with the Baptist Church. The University awards degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University stresses character development, which includes religious, cultural, social, and ethical values. Ultimately, Shaw University endeavors to graduate students with demonstrated competencies in their chosen fields of study.

| In a recent interview with WFAE 90.7, Charlotte's NPR news source, Shaw University sophomore Mass Communication major and men's soccer student-athlete Jacky Fulu Kiazayadioko reflected on the excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the opportunity it presents to elevate HBCU soccer.

A proud supporter of the Democratic Republic of the Congo national team, Kiazayadioko also shared his aspirations of competing at the international level one day.

Shaw University celebrated the Class of 2026 with a powerful Commencement ceremony, featuring an inspiring keynote from Edwina Findley Dickerson, an acclaimed actress, author, producer, and humanitarian whose work amplifies stories that inspire change.
