Today we said a bittersweet goodbye to Whitney Wilson as she heads off to an exciting new career chapter!✨

Whitney has been an incredible part of our team, and we couldn't let her leave without properly celebrating everything she has done for us. To thank her for all her hard work, dedication, and the countless ways she’s made our workplace better, we hosted an ice cream social this afternoon to hang out, share some laughs, and wish her the absolute best.🍦🍨

We are so grateful for her contributions and will miss having her around the office every day, but we know she is going to do amazing things in her next role.

Our ASSURE students have been hard at work this summer! 🐺🔬

Through the Animal Science Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE) program, students spent 12 weeks gaining hands-on experience in animal science research alongside faculty and graduate student mentors.

But their summer wasn't just about research! Throughout the program, students also participated in professional development, leadership and communication training, career exploration, industry networking and more — all while learning about the many opportunities available in animal science and food animal agriculture.

To wrap up their summer experience, each student created a research poster and presented their work at the NC State Summer Undergraduate Research & Creativity Symposium, sharing the research they spent the summer working on. 🎓📊

We are so proud of everything our ASSURE students accomplished this summer and grateful to the faculty, graduate students and industry partners who helped mentor and support them along the way!

ASSURE Recap:

- 🥜🐷 Priya, Erik, & Jeimy worked on a nursery pig research trial at the Swine Education Unit evaluating the use of different peanut types in swine diets. Each student worked with a different peanut variety — Priya with Spanish, Erik with Virginia, and Jeimy with Runner peanuts. They helped prepare the peanuts at the Feed Mill and assisted with experiment management and data collection to evaluate pig growth performance compared with a control diet.

- 🐂🐑 Bella & Lauren worked with the collaborative Poole/Pickworth/Weaver lab throughout the summer. Under the direction of Dr. Poole, Bella studied the effects of endophyte-infected tall fescue on heat-stressed beef heifers. Under the direction of Dr. Weaver, Lauren analyzed feed efficiency variability in Katahdin sheep. Lauren also assisted with the lab’s ongoing beef cattle research, gaining hands-on experience with data collection and experiment management.

- 🔬 Caitlyn worked with Dr. Felipe Silva’s lab studying heat stress in beef cattle. At the Cherry Research Station, she helped monitor respiration rates and panting scores, check sensors, process uterine samples, search for Day 17 embryos, and cryopreserve samples for future analysis.

- 🐄🩺 Sarah & Justina worked with the Ward lab on projects focused on dairy cattle health. Their research explored antibiotic use for mastitis and the use of imaging to detect illness in calves. Both wrapped up the summer by presenting their research posters!

- 🐷🧬 Jennifer & Megan worked with Dr. Jicai Jiang’s lab, gaining experience in swine genetics and genomics. Their work involved using genomic data, statistical analysis, and programming to better understand economically important production traits in pigs. Through their projects, they gained hands-on experience applying statistical genetics and bioinformatics to real-world animal science research.

✏️📚 First Day of School: Graduate Student Edition 🎓🐺

It wouldn’t be the first (well...technically second) day of classes without making our Animal Science graduate students pose for their annual first-day-of-school pictures! From M.S. students, to M.R. students, to Ph.D. students who are somewhere around the 20th grade, no one is too old for a first-day-of-school sign! 😂

We asked the important questions: What grade are you in? Who’s your advisor? What do you want to be when you grow up? And, most importantly, what are your favorite things?

The finished worksheets have officially taken over our wall, and we think they make some pretty great office decor! ❤️🤍

To the parents who thought first-day-of-school pictures ended after high school (or college… or the first graduate degree): you’re welcome. We hope you appreciate us continuing the tradition for your fully grown children!📸

Happy first day of classes to our Animal Science graduate students! Here’s to a great 2026–27 school year! 🐄🐖🐎🐓

🎓🐺 Welcome to the Pack!

Yesterday, we welcomed our newest Animal Science graduate students at our Fall 2026 Graduate Student Orientation! We had a great turnout of new MS, MR, and PhD students who joined us for a delicious lunch and had the opportunity to hear from several key individuals within the department.

We’re excited to have this group joining the Animal Science family and can’t wait to see all they accomplish during their time at NC State! ❤️🤍

Here’s to a great semester and an even better year ahead! 🐄🐖🐎🐓

🎥Welcome back to Research in 60 Seconds! 🧪

Our graduate students are tackling big questions in animal science and breaking them down into bite-sized explanations for the rest of us!

This week, Alexa Gormley shares her Ph.D. research on how prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics can improve the intestinal health of nursery pigs. By supporting beneficial gut microbes and strengthening the pigs' immune systems, her research explores nutritional strategies that can help young pigs grow healthier while reducing health challenges during one of the most vulnerable stages of life! 🐷🦠

Watch the full video to learn why some of the smallest organisms can make tone of the biggest differences in pig health!
