Congratulations to department namesake Ross W. Lampe Jr. on receiving the Watauga Medal!

He gave a transformational gift in 2025 to support the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. He helped the program continue adding new programs and opportunities for the 600 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students currently enrolled at both NC State University and UNC-Chapel Hill. He now joins a group of 141 well-deserving recipients honored over the last 51 years, embodying the support of NC State’s founding Watauga Members in a unique collaboration with UNC-Chapel Hill.

First-year Sutter McQuillan traveled all the way from Australia to join the Wolfpack. How did he decide on NC State? He wanted a large university with a strong engineering reputation, big athletics program and clear sense of community and support.

“I’m considering mechanical and industrial engineering and doing something in robotics or manufacturing,” he said. “I also love talking to people and building community. I want to use engineering to make a difference for people.”

As Raleigh city leaders discuss how to meet increased water demands following a year-long drought, Professor Sankar Arumugam is offering a cheaper, more efficient solution.

Raleigh has faced a drought since August 2025. City council memebers are discussing building a new water reservoir, which could cost more than $300 million. Arumugam's alternate suggestion? Raise the water level at Falls Lake.

Arumugam believes asking the Corps to raise the operating water level again could provide a cheaper, sustainable solution to the city’s water demands, with minimal increase in flood risk for downstream communities. Arumugam’s group has studied this extensively by researching major reservoirs in the Southeast, and they found that a modest increase in the water level does not create substantial flood risk.

This approach, coupled with other demand management strategies such as alternate-day watering, rebates for low-flush toilets and waste-water reuse for lawn irrigation, could provide a sustainable way to manage the city’s water supply needs.

“Any infrastructure solution for water management should be investigated considering both supply augmentation and demand reduction strategies to manage the city’s growing demand, and this requires a dialogue with all the stakeholders by considering all alternatives,” Arumugam said.

Congratulations to the engineering alumni honored at this year's Alumni Achievement Awards!

Marco Zarate received the Distinguished Global Alumni Award, which honors an international graduate of NC State who has made exceptional contributions to their profession and community and who represents the Think and Do spirit to the broader world.

Patrick Murray received the Meritorious Service Award, given to an NC State graduate who has made significant contributions to their profession, community and NC State.

After 34 years at NC State University, Richard Spontak, Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Alumni Distinguished Graduate and Undergraduate Professor is retiring!

He first joined NC State in 1992. In his tenure, he published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and over 35 scholarly works as book chapters. He's been cited over 18,000 times.

His research interests include phase behavior, morphology, polymer nanocomposites, electron microscopy and stimuli-response soft materials.

His excellent in teaching was recognized with the 2025 Outstanding Extension Award, the 2024 Jackson Rigney International Service Award and the 2022 Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence — the highest honor bestowed upon NC State faculty.

Alumnus J. David Beam III received the Watagua Medal recently, the highest nonacademic honor presented by the university.

“My parents sent me to NC State to study civil engineering to prepare me for a career. That worked out just as they had hoped. What they would not have imagined is that my time here was not just transactional. It was more than that. It was transformational.”

A native of Hamlet, North Carolina, Beam has long been a committed supporter of the College of Engineering, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, and of Wolfpack Athletics. He is also the founder, former owner and former CEO of JD Beam/Beam General Contractors, a Raleigh commercial construction firm established in 1979. Beam retired from the company in 2013.

Beam’s gifts have also supported a new home for Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and a named lab in Fitts-Woolard Hall, as well as the University’s Greatest Needs, Feed the Pack Food Pantry, Forever Bell Tower and College of Engineering Leadership funds, among others. He also served as a member of the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Fellows.

Like dreams, trees take root and reach for the skies.

They start small, grow with experience, sway in the blowing wind and tell a unique story with every ring of their inner soul.

NC State’s newest tree was planted this spring in honor of one of the school’s biggest dreamers, NASA astronaut Christina Hammock Koch, the three-time graduate of the university who fulfilled her lifelong dream of flying to the moon in April as one of four crewmembers on NASA’s Artemis II.

The tree, a 6-foot-tall loblolly pine, is special: It’s a second-generation Moon Tree, the descendant of about 2,000 sycamore, loblolly pine, sweetgum, redwood and Douglas fir seeds that NASA command module pilot Stuart Roosa, a former employee of the U.S. Forest Service, took with him on the Apollo 14 moon mission in 1971.
