How can higher education institutions balance student support, community safety and due process in complex threat assessment cases? Find out at the 2026 NC Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Symposium with “Removal or Management: Balancing Institutional Protection and Violence Prevention in Higher Education Threat Assessment,” presented by Kyle Smith, Ed.D., and NCSBI Special Agent Brie Benson.
This session will explore the critical balance between violence prevention principles and institutional risk management in higher education threat assessment and management. Participants will examine how institutions can avoid arbitrary or reactionary removal decisions while still taking decisive action when a student presents an imminent or escalating threat. The presentation will highlight the role of multidisciplinary teams, objective assessment tools, documentation practices and policy development in supporting equitable, consistent and defensible decision-making.
We look forward to hearing Smith and Benson share their expertise in September! See the full agenda for the symposium at bit.ly/4xWSclT
