Calling all Shelton Challenge alumni, staff and volunteers!

đź—“ SAVE THE DATE: Join us on November 21st for our 2nd Annual Shelton [re]Challenge!

This is a one-day experience for the Shelton Challenge community to reconnect and learn more about values-based leadership. This year's theme is "Leading Together: Valuing All Perspectives and Experiences for a Stronger Community."

We’re also looking for former participants and staff, including high school and college students, to share their expertise by leading a session! Got a workshop or activity idea? Session proposal submissions are open now through September 21st.

Please join us in congratulating Sonia Pereira on receiving a Fulbright Teaching Assistant Award! Beginning this September, Sonia will travel to Turkey to teach English and represent U.S. culture abroad.

Over the past year she’s been a Data and Assessment Intern at the Shelton Leadership Center, playing an instrumental role in measuring and analyzing the impact of our programs and offerings. Today is her last day in the office, and we’re so grateful for everything she’s contributed.

"Sonia is one of those 'gems' you want to see go and do amazing things in life, yet wish you could have her stay for many years. She has been truly invaluable to the Center's assessment reporting this summer and will greatly miss her attention to detail and ability to synthesize information in such a concise manner," Dr. Debbie Acker, SLC Director, said.

Celebrating on National Intern Day made it extra special as it was the last day for our Shelton Challenge intern team. A huge thanks to Bella, Cam, and Jordyn for their dedication this season. We also want to thank our Data & Assessment Intern, Sonia, for all her hard work on assessment reporting throughout the summer!

Spring 2027 Global Leadership and Team Decision-Making Minor (GLM) study abroad applications close in 2 months!

Open to students of all majors, the GLM prepares students to build global leadership skills and mindsets.

We offer this experience in partnership with the NC State European Center in Prague, where students begin their 90-day experience abroad before traveling to other European cities throughout the semester.

We're officially in the third and final week of the Summer 2026 Red Hat Shelton Challenge, and our student teams are finishing strong! From cheering each other on to pushing past comfort zones during classroom discussions, the energy has been amazing.

During high ropes, one team even came up with a creative pepper scale to figure out how much encouragement each person needed before tackling the telephone pole jump, from jalapeño for a little extra confidence to Carolina Reaper for maximum hype and support!

As part of the Shelton Challenge graduation ceremony at the end of last week, each team brought one of the week's core themes to life through a Shark Tank-style presentation, sharing what the theme means to them and how a game, product, or concept could implement it in real life.

This week’s teams had a wide range of creative ideas, including new reusable energy sources, student-led helplines for bullying, and even a card game to promote truly knowing your team.

The presentations showcased the growth and collaboration that define the Shelton Challenge experience, and we’re proud of each participant for thinking outside of the box and demonstrating what they’ve learned!
