This feral colony of honey bees is located next to a heavily traveled sidewalk and was becoming a concern. Instead, it has become a great opportunity to educate the general public! Thank you to all involved in helping to protect the honey bees.

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census on August 21 and 22 is a community science project that invites folks of all ages to observe and count pollinators in their yards and neighborhoods. This annual event aims to collect data on pollinator population levels and educate the public on the importance of pollinators.

New semester - Same Professor! Dr. David Tarpy has been teaching the Bees and Beekeeping class for 20 years!!! During this time he has inspired 3,739 students, teaching them about the biology, cultural significance, management and importance of bees.

This report by Dan Haggerty at WRAL news is very thorough with all the information you need about what to look for and how to report it. The yellow-legged hornet (YLH) has been a hot topic in the last several days since the first confirmed discovery in North Carolina. Please take time to read the information on the NC Department of Agriculture’s website that gives a great description of the YLH. Learn the difference between the YLH and the more commonly found European hornet and learn how to make a trap to monitor your area. Also, check out the page for reporting potential YLH activity.
