What a night for the family! 🐺 Our 25th annual Paul Zia Memorial Lecture drew nearly 1,000 people in person and online and raised nearly $70,000 in sponsorships.

Keynote speakers shared the story behind a $91 million pier extension for the Navy in Washington state. The evening also honored the late Paul Zia, a renowned structural engineer who served as department head beginning in 1979, and recognized our graduate students who received scholarships funded by the lecture’s sponsors.

What does a concert venue look like before opening night? Our students just found out. 👀

They toured the new Red Hat Amphitheater construction site, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the artist suites, main stage, ticket booth and step-down seating. 🎶

Our students saw formwork, rebar placement for a concrete pour and the steel framing of the main stage. They even learned that engineers sloped certain roofs to deflect sound from the railroad tracks behind the stage.

"It's always great to be on a site and see what you're learning in class applied to real, impactful projects," student Rachel Dawson said.

A beach day with a purpose! 🏖️❤️

Our COPRI (Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute) student chapter recently traveled to Wilmington to participate in the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association's National Beach Sweep, collecting around 25 pounds of waste!

"Collaborations like this give us the opportunity to connect with fellow coastal students, strengthen partnerships and work together to protect the coastlines we study and care about," said Roya Sahraei, graduate research assistant.

We're on the up and up! 🏆

U.S. News & World Report's 2027 Best Colleges ranking just dropped, and we're proud to announce our environmental engineering and civil engineering programs made the top 10 and top 15 across undergraduate programs at public institutions.

This is a huge accomplishment for our students, faculty and staff! ❤️

🚧 SITE VISIT: Students from CE 305 visited an active construction site for the Complete 540 project, an NCDOT effort to extend the Triangle Expressway in Knightdale to close the outer 540 loop.

Students saw real-world applications of what they've been learning in class so far this semester: planning, designing and operating transportation systems. 🛣️

Ph.D. student Faby Claure won first place in NC State's Envisioning Research contest in the Grad Student/Postdoc Video category! 🏆🎥

Her video shows a shake table test, where a reinforced concrete bridge column is subjected to strong shaking that simulates an earthquake. This particular test simulates the Llolleo earthquake motion at a 4.4 amplitude scale.

🗯️“Having visual contact with research makes what we are studying feel real, impactful and fascinating,” she said. “It reminds us why research matters.”
