Researchers at NC State are developing a way to construct bridges faster and make them more resilient against natural disasters. 🌉

In a recent study, researchers investigated a new type of structural connection used to reduce construction time, minimize traffic disruption and improve material quality.

The connection, called “external socket connections," will allow structural pieces to fit together quickly and seamlessly, almost like LEGO pieces. 🧱

The anticipation! 😬 Last week, 24 high school students visited Centennial Campus for the Summer Camp.

Campers worked in teams to construct a 4-foot-tall tower that was durable and aesthetically pleasing. Teams then tested their towers by loading them laterally through a pulley system and a bucket.

What an exciting week with the next generation of engineers! 🐺

Engineering on a world stage. ⚽️🌎

Researchers at ’s Constructed Facilities Lab provided a critical assist to all World Cup soccer players by helping to improve their playing fields across North America.

Researchers tested both the structural load capacity and cooling capabilities of Permavoid, a permeable plastic material manufactured by ABT Inc. in Statesville, NC, that’s used in a hybrid natural grass and artificial turf system deployed to the World Cup host sites.

Their work helped create safer, more consistent playing surfaces for the world’s top athletes. 👏

Big congrats to Professor Detlef Knappe for winning the 2026 Trailblazer Award from the National PFAS Conference! 👏

Knappe has dedicated years to studying forever chemicals, specifically PFAS. Notably in 2016, he co-authored a paper that investigated PFAS pollution in the Wilmington, NC area's drinking water.

The researchers found the pollution originated from a fluorochemical production plant near Fayetteville, NC, leading to a number of regulatory actions to decrease the contamination.

🗯️ “It was very special to receive this award because it recognizes the positive impacts my group’s research has had on PFAS-contaminated communities,” Kanppe said.
